How did you and J come to the decision to grow your family through foster care and adoption?

We had gone through a consult with a RE and then realized that financially we wouldn't be able to insem every cycle like we wanted to, we didn't want to feel like we weren't giving it our all so we started discussing adoption. We initially wanted to do a private adoption but knew that would take a lot of networking so we talked to a family member who fosters and has adopted and that set us on our path. We were fortunate in that our agency has been our charity for years and we knew we wanted to work with them once we chose that route.

How is Iz doing with the new additions to the family now that the initial dust has settled?

Iz has always been fine with kids coming and going. She is good with the girls but is still attention seeking, it has to do with her ADD and socialemotional problems. Iz's bio mom was bipolar and schizophrenic, we see a lot of related behaviors in her and although none are harmful to anyone else, I fear for Iz, she has a lot of hurt in her. Iz can be overzealous/annoying when playing with the little girls but has learned to calm herself when asked.

Now that A and Iz are in school it's easier to have quality time with each of the kids.

Owl and I spend 2 hours together in the morning while Apple naps, we do a lot of the bonding activities that we've learned during therapy and even if I am doing chores, I put music on so we can engage through dancing.

When Apple gets up from her naps I make a point to get on the floor and play with her for at least 1015 minutes after each nap. She is learning to walk right now so I often help her "chase" Owl when I'm not busy. I am the comforting Mom for Apple so when she seeks me I drop what I am doing to snuggle her.

Iz is out of school at 11:45 so I help her with her homework while the babies occupy themselves. I try to sit down with her for an hour once a week to have a heart to heart.

A is my chatty girl and I make a mighty effort to answer all of her questions and not zone her out. I often discuss books with her while the other 3 girls are napping or ask her to help me prepare meals, she likes to help cook.

Time with J is not taken for granted, we make time by putting all of the kids to bed at 8pm. We don't go on dates or do anything alone other than the time we have after bedtime so we take the 8pm bedtime pretty seriously.

No, we had her evaluated by the SART program the one Owl is receiving therapy through and she was put on the waiting list for their therapist but aged out of their services as of her birthday last week.

I've been looking for a therapist who will see her but we've been denied by quite a few.
  • How long have you been a SAHM?  Do you ever think about going back to working outside the home?
TTC with PCOS since July 2011.
    IVF Oct/Nov 2012
    Beta #1 = 77, Beta #2 = 190, Beta #3 = 1044
    Cautiously optimistic.

I've been a SAHM for 3 years. There are times when I wish I could work outside the home again but I am happy where I am and thankful to be able to have my cake business.

The school psychologist or social worker would be a great resource for some names of therapists in your area who see children.
