DD needs a brain ultrasound :(

Has anyone had any experience with that?  The pedi wants to get one done because her head circumference is very large in comparison to her body.  She is consistently moving up the charts on all three areas, but her head is now over 90th%.  Pedi thinks it is a good idea to rule out any pathological things that might be causing it.  They don't think the u/s will show anything because she is meeting her milestones early and she is very social, and without any deficits.  They just want to rule out any issues early to err on the safe side.  I personally think she just inherited her daddy's big noggin.

If anyone has had any experience with this, can you tell me what to expect?  I assume there would be no need for anesthesia like there would be for a CT scan or MRI.  Prayers and thoughts are welcome too as we wait for results.  I am a little nervous about the what ifs...

Re: DD needs a brain ultrasound :(

  • No experience but we're in the same boat, Maggie's in the 90th for head size and if she goes off the charts we'll have to get an ultrasound also, per the AAP. Our doc says we'll just have to do it with the first baby, then we'll know we just have large headed (and big brained!) kids. I have the big head in the family, as does everyone on my dad's side.

I know it's hard but try not to worry too much. One of our friends is a pedi at Children's in Liberty Twsp., he says it's an easy proceedure (he'll actually do Maggie's for us if we end up needing to get one). Keep us posted, okay?

  • If I remember correctly, Max had one.  It is exactly like the ultrasounds you had when you were pregnant.  They will put jeel on her head and look around.  It will be painless for her.  I am almost positive that is all that it is.

I will be thinking about you guys and praying for good results.  Good Luck!

  • I just wanted to say we are thinking of you and praying for the best!! Kudos to your doctor for doing this to rule out any problems.

    Big hugs to you guys!!

  • My nephews all had to have one. No biggie. DD may need one too, as her body is in the 3rd percentile and her head is in the 55th...

  • Carter had a few. Just like pp said it is just like a pregnancy ultrasound, except they scan your melon. Piece of cake.
  • My parents went through this when I was a baby, and they wound up doing a gazillion tests and scared them half to death.  Turns out I have a big head because my mom did.  After about 6 mos of testing, my mom says to the doc "you know, I have a larger head..." so he measures it and says "oh, that must be it!"  I'm willing to bet we'll probably go through the same thing.  Brandon's wearing 6-12 months hats now (but he won't be for long!) and the 12-24 mo ones fit decently too.  Both DH and I have larger heads (his hat size is 7 3/4... and they almost fit me!).

I hope everything turns out alright!!!  It sounds like it's a fairly easy test, but I'll be saying a little prayer for both of you!

  • I don't know anything about the ultrasound, but I will say DD has always been 95th percentile for head circumference, even now.  It's never been a problem other than having a hard time getting shirts over her head Smile  Good luck!
  • It sounds so scary, but the pp's have all made good points and I'm sure it will turn out to be nothing.  Good thing your doctor is playing it on the safe side, though.  Hugs!

  • BTW, your siggy is so freaking cute!  She's such a doll.
  • Thanks everyone.  The common sense medical background part of me says "no worries".  The mommy part of me can't help but think "what if?".  I am glad there are others here that are familiar with it and it is not so uncommon.  That makes me feel much better.  I truly do believe she just inherited her daddy's big noggin.  Once the test comes back negative, that will be the end of any concern over her head size...for good!

Oh and how I can relate to struggling to get her shirts over her head.  It's a sight to behold. Her Christmas hat in my siggy is two sizes larger than the dress, and it barely fit her.  I am glad clothing comes in separates.

I will update once the results are in.

  • A little late on this one but thought I'd tell you that we had the same issue with my DS.  He's such a tiny guy (he's 4 now and only weighs 30 pounds).  When he was an infant he wasn't even on the charts for his height and weight until he was almost 1 and since then he's consistently 5-10th percentile. Buuuuut all that time his big ol' melon would be in the 85-90th percentile.  Our doctor never sent us for a brain u/s but I'd imagine yours is doing so just to be cautious.  Try not to worry!!

  • I don't know anything about large heads, but Charlotte did have to have a heart u/s when she was five days old.  It was actually quite an easy process - she slept through all of it.  It's just like an u/s of your belly and causes no pain to your little one.

I wish you guys the best of luck.
