Graco MyRide 65 problems?

Does anyone else have issues with tightening the straps if you have this carseat?

When we have it out of the car, the straps tighten just fine. When we put him in it and tighten it on the ground-no problems. Once we install the carseat (using the Latch system), we cannot get the stupid straps to tighten. Both my husband and I have pulled and tugged on the tightening strap, and it won't budge. I am so frustrated. We've tried it in his truck and my SUV and it's the same problem! It's like when it's rear facing the strap is against the backseat and it needs to be pulled tight at an angle or something.

Has anyone dealt with this? I'm ready to take the stupid seat back.

  • We have this seat in my dh's car and it is the same thing. He actually has learned not to loosen the straps. I think he and I are also used to getting the straps really tight because we have the evenflo triumph in my car with the knob. I hear it gets better when it is forward facing.

  • We actually pull the straps from the back and then pull it tight. It doesn't work that well if I just try to pull the tightening strap, don't know why.

  • Thanks you all. At least I know it's an issue.

I'll try to put some resistance on the straps in the back and see how that does, otherwise we'll just keep wrestling him in...for a year! Confused

  • That's par for the course with this seat.  I want to love it, but I hate it.  We don't tighten or loosen the straps unless we have to - meaning we don't do it unless he grows out of the current size.  It takes some getting used to, but it's much easier to strap him in that way.

I also have a repeated problem with the cover falling off.  It's awesome.

  • Too funny as I never had this problem with my Graco, but DESPISE my Britax for this very reason.  The Graco is DD#1's and it is forward facing, the Britax is RF.  Perhaps its an issue when the convertible seats are backwards?!?!  I have to tighten the Britax straps the same way as pp described above.

  • I have two, one for my almost 3 year old and one for my 1 year old. It is annoying to tighten when it is rear-facing but I have found most car seats to be annoying in this regard. My DD is forward facing and we have no issues with tightening hers.  We do what everyone else suggests and don't loosen the straps unless we need to for some reason.

  • Yes, I have had the same problem, but I found an easy solution.  When I need to tighten the straps, I reach around to the back of the seat and pull on the shoulder straps, then I pull on the strap that comes out at the crotch.  That always does the trick.  It just seems like it's not able to pull it through those slots by the kid's shoulders on its own and needs a little help.

I can't blame you for wanting to take it back.  It drove me insane for a while too, but try what I do and if that doesn't help then maybe take it back.

  • Thanks for the tips, I'm definitely trying the shoulder strap ideas!

  • I had the same problem, but did the pulling from the back trick. FWIW, it tightens like a dream when it's FF.  I think it's because it works best if you pull downwards on the strap, which is impossible when it's rear facing.

  • Thankfully I haven't had this problem. The problem we do have is tightening the anchor straps on the bottom (he is forward facing already)... It's a pain in the butt to tighten or loosen!!

  • We had the same problem with the latch strap not tightening. We finally gave up on it and took it to our local police station, since they do seat checks. The officer told us that in order to get the strap tightened properly we had to put a lot of pressure pushing the seat down into the seat of the car. He pushed down and tightened the latch strap and now the seat does not move. He said this was the case with all rearfacing seats using the latch system. I believe this is something the company should put in the installation guide, but do not.
  • This was really the only negative review I found when I was researching which one to buy. However, I think I'm one of the only ones who hasn't had a problem with this.  lol.  I don't typically have to loosen/tighten though.  If I do, I find it's easiest to make sure I'm pulling up on the little lever that holds the cord tight.  It's an odd angle and hard to get to, but it works best for me.
