Early risers?

I know we've talked about this before...anyone else dealing with a very early riser?

Eli has gradually moved his wake-up time from 7 AM to 5 AM and this mama is tired and not sure what to do.  His bedtime is 7:30 PM.  I've tried moving bedtime earlier and later, but it has no affect (effect?) on his wake-up time.  He can put himself back to sleep at other times during the night, but it seems like if he wakes up any time after 5 then it's game over.  Even though he's initially happy when I go get him, it only lasts for about 15 minutes and then he's a cranky mess.  Feeding him back to sleep usually doesn't work.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em?  Has anyone had any success with getting a little one to sleep longer in the mornings?

Re: Early risers?

  • T usually wakes up between 5:30a and 6. I'm not much help because he'll eat, get a change and go back down for a few hours.  He only takes one afternoon nap, though.  Some babies just start their day early but I can appreciate how tiring it is for you.

  • I don't really have any recommendations, just an idea that may/may not be relevant: is the room still dark when the sun comes up? Maybe he is being awakened by the light and shades could help?

    Good luck!

  • Lucas has always been an early riser.  Even as an infant.  He typically wakes between 4:45am and 5:30am.  On occasion he will sleep until 6am but that is rare.  His bedtime is 7pm.  I am fine with this since he will be starting daycare in September and need to wake up that early anyway.

  • I was ok with our 6-6:30 wake-up time, but lately it has been 5. 5 is very early after we are usually up for a bottle at 3 or sometimes 4 which is worse. I have no tips for you. I'd rather fix our night wakings. Maybe then I wouldn't feel so tired getting up at 5.

  • Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child recommends not going into the room until at least 6. He says by going in any earlier it gives the "ok" to the child to wake up that early.

  • DS wakes around 530 a few days a week (other days he's sleeping till 615.)  We do not go in until 630.  We use Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child for our sleep book.  He usually just plays with his lovie and babbles.  When this first started happening a few months ago, he'd fuss and cry, and there were a few times we went in, but more often than not we let him fuss a bit (we only went in when he was in full-on cry mode).  Now it's like he doesn't expect us to be in there till 630 and he's just fine amusing himself.  Good luck!
