Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Hysterical crying? (also posted on 0-3 months)

Hi mommies!

I'm hoping someone might have some advice. My baby is 2 months old and so far she's been a fantastic easy going baby. She never fussed unless it was for eating or a dirty diaper. Other than that she's been all smiles and little baby babble that I can't understand. However, this week she's gone from that to hysterically crying (HYSTERICAL) with nothing to console her except that she'll fall asleep after crying for so long. The only things that I can think of are:

1. She had her shots but its been 4 day since that happened so I'm assuming its no longer shot related.

2. Colic? I breast feed her every day except for the 2 days that I go to work. I'm going to try posting to see if anyone has any ideas for different bottles.

I called the doctor this am and she said that it might be a virus so we are taking the baby in tomorrow just to see. But I figured perhaps someone else might have had something similar (I'm not sure if its indeed virus related).

  • I know at only 2 months it might be hard to tell but is she showing any signs of belly pains? I think it was around that age I started realizing that whenever I would eat dairy DD would have awful gas pains...aside from the hysterical crying she would pull her knees up and you could just tell she was in pain.

  • This could be it. The crying is so bad and it seems as if she's in pain.. I tried tylenol but she vomits directly after we attempt to give it to her :(
  • The only time DS every cried and I couldn't console him, he'd picked up a virus....gastroenteritis, I think. It was just one bad night, though. I honestly don't remember how we treated it. I took him to the doctor the next day, and that's where he got the gastroenteritis diagnosis.

  • Maybe she is just overtired? Bad days I had in the beginning with DS were usually due to him not sleeping well and he would cry hysterically. It's the only times it was hard to console him.

  • Have you tried any gas drops? I know that when my DD had gas, she would constantly try to curl her little legs up to her chest.

Has anything changed in your diet? I didn't breastfeed myself, but I know my SIL did and my nephew would get gassy when she added certain foods to her diet.

Hope your little one feels better soon!

  • I she just 2 months or 2 months and then some?  My guy only got hysterical crying at that age around growth spurts when he got hungry.  Around 8 weeks I had him on the boob nonstop for a couple of days - he was eating every hour/90 minutes.

  • I am so sorry.  That is tough and so heartbreaking.  Some thoughts (also echoed above)....

Are you breastfeeding?  I would try cutting out dairy.  And try some gripe water.

My son was overtired a lot then (had such a hard time sleeping but needed it) and could only handle being awake in 90 minute spurts.  Also, there were a few growth spurt days where he needed to nurse like every 1.5 hrs.  Maddening but we got through it!

Have you ever heard of the Purple Period of Crying?  It's a curriculum taught at the hospital I delivered at.  You can google it, basically, one of the interesting points is that fussiness/crying usually peaks at 2 months.  At 3 months, it was as if someone turned a key in my son and he was so much more content and calm.

See your pedi and hopefully it's nothing serious!
