Hey ladies...  Lurker here.  Thought I should start contributing a bit!!!

I have a question... When did you/should you have your bags packed for the hospital?

Thanks:)

  • At our birthing class they gave us a list of suggestions for items to put in our bag as well as the time frame to start packing at around 32 weeks.  After reading the list I realized I did not have any hospital pajamas. Yes you can wear the lovely hospital gown but I hate those things. Id rather have my own and since I normally sleep without anything on I had to purchase some.  Our list suggested nursing gowns, or something that opens at the top if you plan to breast feed. I just got some cute sets that have buttons on the top for about 25.00 a set at Roaman.

i can't remember exactly when i did it last time . . maybe between 30-34 weeks? I just put everything together i could and put a list on the top of stuff i would need to grab last minute.i went into labor @ 37 weeks, so it was good i had it done. i brought too much junk and wont' be doing it again. i wore hospital gowns the whole time--you will be bleeding. i had no desire to put on my own stuff. i also never touched my makeup and some other stuff i brought.
  • I will probably pack 34 weeks before! Hopefully I'll have a vaginal delivery again so I'm all for hospital pjs!
    1. Won't have to worry about cleaning them when I get home and
    2. All that blood on my new pjs no thanks!!!

This time around I'll have to pack a bag for my son too... Now you have me thinking!

  • I packed really early first time around, just because I was bored and nesting.  I think realistically, 35-36 weeks is on the very safe side, you're probably ok doing it when you reach full term (37 weeks).  There's obviously no harm in doing it early, though!  Better safe than sorry!

A few things I'm glad I packed first time around:

    - eye mask and earplugs to try to get some sleep while in labor (I was in labor for 21.5 hours, and the lights in the room are super bright!  I was comfortable because of the epidural, but it was hard to sleep with the lights on and the sounds of the hospital.

    - lip balm

    - I definitely overpacked, but it was worth it.  I packed a "Daddy Bag" for DH as a little surprise - I got him a new pair of boxers, some magazines, a few snacks and drinks (nothing that needed refrigeration), etc.

I forgot to pack DH a change of clothes (yeah, I know, he should've though of that himself!) so my mom had to bring him some of my brother's clothes to change into!

And don't forget your chargers and cameras!  My hospital had free Wi-Fi so it was great to be able to go online, though I probably should've been sleeping!

  • Thanks ladies for being such a huge help!
  • Haha, I packed at 36 weeks last time as we were on our way out the door to L&D because I wasn't sure if my water had broken. I'll be a little more prepared this time, I hope!

Oh crap, I know I knew this, I just hadn't actually thought about it or when to do it.  Ah, heck, the inlaws have a housekey and know were everything is, if I don't get it done before we have to go to the hospital, they can just go grab what they think they will need! LOL! Wink

As for my bag, I'll probably pack at around 36w, well at least most of it.  I'll keep a list of items that need to be added last minute right on top of the bag incase someone else has to complete the process for me.
