December 2010 Moms

monitor? wwyd?

We are moving next month (so excited!!) and I'm starting to think about some logistics of the new house.  We currently have a smaller cape style house - with our bedroom the whole upstairs and two bedrooms downstairs.  One of those downstairs rooms is Aiden's.  New house - we will have five bedrooms, but the master suite is downstairs on the first floor.  I LOVE the master and always felt fine about being on a different level as Aiden since we always have been, but now starting to panic about it.

We do have a video monitor, but we don't have the sound on because he's directly below us so if he were to cry we would hear him.  Also, with the VM, even though the sound is off, it still amplifies the sound in that room.  I don't want it on because we still have white noise playing in his room, and I really hate hearing that all night.

So, in the new house we will be pretty far away from him - he's upstairs and the opposite side of the house :(  We could take one of the upstairs bedrooms, but....I really don't love that idea either.

What would you do here??  Every option has a con.  Move upstairs - sacrifice my beautiful master suite and then it's a useless room downstairs.  Stay downstairs - I'll have to turn the VM on and listen to the stupid white noise all night.

Anyone in a similar situation??

Re: monitor? wwyd?

  • Well how about turning off the white noise machine- or turning it down?

I have a video monitor and I HAVE to hear that white noise coming thru the machine- otherwise I can't sleep (well when I do sleep). Oh and my boys are like 20 feet down the hall LOL.

  • Lol...my husband likes the white noise and is all for us turning the monitor on so we can hear it :)  I am not a fan!

I do think we will turn it down since now we don't need it as much.  Currently, his room is right off the kitchen and living room, so we rely on the white noise to prevent him from hearing us if we are too loud.  I am SO looking forward to the new house with him upstairs and away from the main living spaces...so we definitely won't need the white noise as much.

  • Why can't you just get a monitor that only comes on when the sound reaches a certain level? We have a white noise machine in Avery's room and it doesn't set off the monitor.

  • We solved that problem by turning the white noise on low and the monitor on the very lowest volume level.  If he cries then it comes through louder but you really have to hold it to your ear to hear the white noise now.  I bet you hear it more right now b/c you're trying to hear it, kwim?  I bet you'll get used to it really quickly.  I wouldn't sacrifice my master bedroom, it sounds too nice!

  • Could you put the monitor away from your Bed? Like, on your dresser? We don't use one anymore at home, but did when we went on vacation and had rooms on different levels. I could NOT sleep listening to every little noise, and putting it further away helped. If he cries, you'll still hear him, I'm sure!

This. When we did use a monitor, we put it across the room from the white noise machine so it would only pick up his noises.
