Pregnant after 35

Frequency of prenatal visits

Hi, ladies.

I had my last baby at 33 and so I was on a regular schedule. I saw the OB once a month until 7 months, then every two weeks until 8 months, then once a week until birth.

Now I am 35. I am with a new OB this time, after having moved, but I know from his paperwork that I got at my first visit that he follows the same schedule. However, I went in for my 20 week visit yesterday, and he told me he would see me in 4 weeks, and then every two weeks after that -- so he's starting the increased frequency early.

I am healthy, baby is healthy, and there have been zero issues. Think it's owing to my age?

He is also having me do the GD screen at 24 weeks rather than 26-27 -- however, I do have PCOS, so I can understand that.

Re: Frequency of prenatal visits

  • I don't know if the change in timing is due to age (I was 31 with my first, and 35 now) or procedures have changed, but I found I'm at the same point. I was told ahead of time that I'd start two week visits at about 6 months.

Of course, due to timing between visits and testing, I wound up having to be somewhere, for something, every two weeks for the first 3 months anyway.

  • It could just be your doc's personal preference.

My doc is keeping me on the typical schedule since this pregnancy is being pretty textbook

  • My appointments are every six weeks until I hit week 32, when they are weekly to check my fluid levels. I also have to have 2 NSTs a week at that point. I have pre-existing HBP and insulin-dependent GD (well, I did with my first, very early about week 16), I imagine this PG will be similar. I have PCOS, so they had me go in for my 1 hour glucose (which I failed) with my normal PG workup. The frequency might actaully go up around 20 weeks to once a month, actually. I don't remember exactly with my first PG.

  • I was 36 when I had my daughter and that was the same schedule we were on.  After my 20 week appointment he did another monthly appointment and then it was every two weeks until she was born.  When I got to 37 weeks I went in every week and she came a week earlier than expected.  I had miscarried my previous pregnancy so my OB was extra cautious with this one but it turned out great. Wishing you lots of good luck!

  • I've been on a 3 week schedule since 16 weeks at age 40.
  • My doctor did the same. I wasn't expecting biweekly visits that early, but I think she does it with everyone. Or maybe she wanted to watch me more closely because I am obese. Either way, for the small hassle that it is, I learned to appreciate the more frequent visits as I got further along. The feeling that things are routine and going just fine is very reassuring to me!

  • I was every 4 weeks until 30 weeks and then went to every 2 weeks until 34 weeks and then due to swelling (my BP is fine) my doc switched me to weekly because she said I could be fine one day and have pre-e the next.

This. I was on a normal schedule with both of my pregnancies despite being 35 and 38.
  • I am 35 and only see my OB every 4 weeks. After 7 months it will be every 2 weeks then after 8 month every week.

  • It may have nothing to do with your age.  He could just be away from the office in a few weeks and is trying to re-adjust your appts to fit his schedule.  Whatever the case, I wouldn't worry about it, unless insurance/billing is an issue.

Personally, I started seeing my OB at 13w (prior to that I saw my GP at 6 & 8w).  Saw the OB at 13w, 15w (bleeding issue), 17w, 20w, 24w.  Next appt is scheduled for 28w and I go for my GTT at just shy of 26w (I do not see my doc or go to his office for this test, we will discuss results at my 28w appt, or earlier if warranted). IIRC, I saw him monthly til 32w with my first, then every 2w til 36w, then weekly til EDD.  I figure we will follow the same protocol here unless something changes.  Oh and FTR, I am 41 this time compared to 38 last time.

  • I know I already responded... but I just realized, that I won't be going on a weekly schedule at all this time... my final 3 check ups are already scheduled...My last appt was at 34wks, next one is at 37, then the next is at 39wks, and the optimistically scheduled a final one at 39wks 5 days.
