2nd Trimester

Massive INSOMNIA!!! HELP me

Since I have hit the second trimester, I CANT SLEEP!! I can be so tired and the most ill sleep is two hours then I wake up its a battle at night! I've tried body pillows, soothing music, lullaby music for babies...nothing helps. Its like every two hours I wake for an hour then the pattern repeats its self. Never do I not wake up with a headache, Anybody else have this problem?

My sleep pattern, bed at 10, wake up at 12, then up until 2, back to sleep until 4 then up again at 5 then back to bed at 6 then up again at 8....

suggestions?

Re: Massive INSOMNIA!!! HELP me

  • Are you getting up to use the bathroom or just getting up in general? I've found working out in the early evening makes me sleep 100x better.

  • Considering everything else you've tried, I'd probably ask your doctor if it's okay for you to take Benadryl or Unisom or something sometimes.  Mine says it's fine and safe, but of course you should ask your own doctor.  Not sleeping isn't going to make for a very healthy mama!

  • Yes, I get up to go potty but that wouldn't both me, its the unable to sleep and the constant tossing and turning, ancy feeling cause I cant sleep that stinks. Ok, Ill try working out I nice walk or something prior too...maybe yoga!
  • Great to know, I have an OB appt in 7 days Ill be sure to ask about the benadryl.
  • I deal with insomnia even when I'm not pregnant.  If after 20 or 30 minutes you still aren't asleep, get out of bed for 20 minutes or so.  Your mind starts to associate bed with a place you can't sleep and so then, you can't sleep.  Sometimes I just go read in the living room for 20 minutes or so and go back to bed and I fall asleep. Don't watch TV or get online though, it starts to stimulate you too much.  Anyway, I have tried it and found It beats two hours of tossing and turning.

If you're getting up for the bathroom I recommend cutting liquids earlier - worked for me.  Working out later is also a good suggestion - should tire you.

Are you laying in the dark when you try to fall asleep?  Keeping lights, computer, tv, etc. on will inhibit the production of melatonin.

  • I've found that doing my prenatal yoga DVD shortly before bed makes an amazing difference in my ability to sleep soundly.  Whenever I can't ft it in at night, I toss and turn quite a bt, too!
  • I talked to my dr. about Valarian Root (she said it was fine to take) to help me sleep.  She said that a night time tea with Valarian Root would do the trick.  I think she said Sleepytime would work but I haven't done a lot of research on where they get there herbs from because you should stay away from herbs from China etc.

  • I had the same problem for a month in the second trimester and then it went away. Now that I am in the third I never get sleep. My doctor recommended to me yesterday to use Tylenol PM to help with sleeping. You might give that a go.

  • I had the same problem even before I got pregnant.....if you are okay with taking meds, try Tylenol PM (its just tylenol mixed with benadryl-both of which are safe for pregnancy).  My OB said it was perfectly safe, and I sleep great with it...at least 6-7 hours straight

  • I take benadryl every night. It's the same ingredient as one of the types of unisom and it helps quite a bit.

  • Yep, me too.  Ah, the joys of pregnancy. I've found the following helps (a bit):

-no screen time an hour before bed; books are ok, but no iPad or TV.

    - an evening stroll about an hour before bed

-trying not to freak out about how much I'm not sleeping; if I'm lying, resting, it's better than nothing

I haven't tried unison or Benadryl or anything like that yet, I'm pretty resistant to taking pills.

    Good luck!

  • I had horrible insomnia last night. Up til like 4am. But I had horrendous heartburn making it worse. I feel like a zombie today. At least I'm not working.
