Bizarre Weight Gain Question

My weight gain during this pregnancy has been bizarre! I know everyone gains at different rates, and if I get too concerned I'll ask my OB, but I just thought I would check to see if any of you ladies have had a similar experience.

At my confirmation of pregnancy appt at 6w5d I had shot up 10lbs from my last dr office weight, only 3 weeks earlier. I am now 14w3d have not gained an ounce since then. I'm glad I have not continued to gain because the rapid 10lbs at first freaked me out, but I am starting to worry a bit as the weeks pass with no gain since my gain was so early.

FWIW the baby has been right on or ahea of schedule at every appointment and looks fine... it just seems so strange! Also I am overweight and ideally should not gain much durin pregnancy anyway, so maybe that is why it stopped?

Re: Bizarre Weight Gain Question

  • As long as your eating habits are healthy, you don't need to worry at this point. There's no real rhyme or reason to pregnancy weight gain, although most women have a tendency to gain more later since that's when the baby's weight and the amniotic fluid are increasing considerably and most women will start to put on fat for BFing (whether or not you plan to, your body will prepare for it) and retaining fluid. With DD, I didn't gain a pound until 20 weeks. Then between 20w and 34w (when I delivered), I gained almost 25.

Yep, I agree with this.  With DD I gained about 7 pounds in the first tri and then didn't gain any for a while, and went on to gain only 17 pounds total.

ETA: And I should mention that DD was 6.5 pounds at birth and perfectly healthy.

  • Try not to look too far into why you gain or don't gain, it will just stress you out. Like pp's said just eat healthy and let your body do it's thing. Last pregnancy I wouldn't gain for a month and then put on 8 lbs in a month. There was no rhyme or reason. As long as the baby is growing, that is all that matters.

  • There really is no rhyme or reason. I think I ate almost the same thing every day with DD and gained hardly anything by week 20, but ended up gaining 29 lbs by week 36. Sometimes I'd go 3 weeks without gaining, then gain 2 lbs per week for the next month.

You probably gained fluid at first, then started to drop the fluid while putting on real weight. So the scale didn't change but the stuff that made up the weight has, KWIM?

  • I agreed there is no normal. I didnt gain anything in the first trimester, until the last week and I gained four pounds! In one week. Could be water weight.

  • I tend to gain about a pound per week, but there were weeks in my previous pregnancies when I wouldn't gain at all, and then I would be 4-5 pounds at a subsequent appointment. I agree with the other posters, there isn't a "norm" with respect to pregnancy weight gain.
