New preemie parent intro

I am a new preemie parent. DD arrived 3 days ago at 29 weeks ago. She is tiny but doing great in the NICU. I know we have a long road ahead of us with her being so small be born so early. Thankful in advance for advice, experience and support from everyone!

  • Welcome. My boys were born at 29w4d four and a half months ago. We spent two months in the NICU with them. How much does your girl weigh? What are her oxygen requirements?

That's amazing that she's moving to the canula already! My boys were on CPAP for about three weeks S was intubated for five days before CPAP. Were you able to get steroid shots?

That's the spirit! Most new parents are like, what, they didn't come home after a week??! JK, but I think you know what I mean ;)

Congratulations on your baby girl - show us a picture, we love to AW new prems!

It will be a long road. NICU is no fun...no fun at all, but please come to us with whatever. We're your new home now...or will be if you'd like us to!

There are a couple links that will help you in my siggy - one is to our blog and the FAQ is good to forward to friends and family so they'll know how to help you better.

  • Congrats and welcome :-)

I agree we would love to see a picture!  I am glad to hear she is doing well.

I had IUGR as well with DS...he was 2 lbs. 9 oz., born at 32 weeks (came home around 4 1/2 pounds).  The NICU is definitely no fun, but after the first week it really does get easier...we spent a total of 40 days.

I hope your stay is as short and uneventful as possible and your DD is home with you soon!

  • Hello and welcome! I am glad to hear your baby is doing well! Little girls are such fighters. My DD was also born at 29 weeks (2 pounds at birth), about seven and a half weeks ago. It's a long road, but not necessarily a bad/scary one all the time. As worried as you may get, every ounce gained and every bit of progress made will bring you hope and joy. The advice I like to give is to be as involved as you possibly can be, especially if you're a FTM. Being hands-on at every opportunity definitely helps to ease some of the anxiety. (I am a FTM, and as crazy as it sounds, even though LO is a preemie I feel more prepared to bring her home because of how much "practice" I've been getting at the hospital!)

  • Congrats on your DD!!  The NICU is not fun but for me it went by quickly- all things considered. We were there 25 days.  I took it one day at a time and focused the moment at hand.  Also, be gentle on yourself when you do break down.  I felt as if I had to be strong all the time and finally had to learn to take help from people and to take care of myself alittle. Things will be ok.  I wish you and your lo a short and uneventful NICU stay.

MissaG, yes we were lucky to get steroid shots 2 weeks before delivery and a booster two days before! Those steroids did some great work apparently, and I'm so glad they were timed well!

  • Thank you so much to everyone for welcoming me here! I know the NICU road will be tough but so well worth it. It's overwhelming trying to recover and learn all the new information all at once.
