It seems to be pretty slow around here today!!
Yesterday, DH had to mow the lawn. (We have a "normal" subdivision size yard. He can mow front and back in about an 50-90 min depending on how long the grass is, and how many sticks/acorns have fallen...) He made a comment about how nice it will be when LO is able to take over that chore. I told DH that it would still be quite a while before that happens...then DH said, "yeah, about 10 years". 10? Hmmm...that seems really young to me. 10 is great for other chores, but I teach 10 year olds and I don't know that I'd trust them with a lawn mower. Maybe one of the old fashioned completely manual ones...but one with a motor? Am I being unreasonable? What do you think?
Re: When would you let your child mow the lawn? CP
I might be weird, but I really enjoyed mowing the lawn as a kid! 10 might be a bit young, though. I'd want to make sure that we went over safety precautions with using something like that first.
Also, a PSA - make sure you wear some sort of eye protection when you mow the lawn. A friend of mine's mower shot a rock into her eye and did some serious damage!
totally depends on the child, but supervised i'm fine with under 9.
and the mowing should be left to the boys gets a big eye roll out of me. girls are perfectly capable of mowing and this type of mentality does nothing but reinforce gender stereotypes in a household. both myself and my brother mowed at a young age.
Of course girls are capable to mowing the lawn, I just rather the boys do stuff like that. Everyone is capable of mowing a lawn.
You might see it as stereotyping, I just see it as each persons role in the family.. Some see this as negative..I just see it as teamwork we all have an understanding of how tasks are divided up.
Honestly, I don't want to get stuck having to mow the lawn, do all the heavy lifting and fix things around the house... Don't get me wrong.. I can do all this stuff but I rather leave that to DH :
This is what I though until I mowed the lawn for the first Time ever this year. I loved it and use the mower when DH doesn't have time now. It's great exercise and frankly it's like pushing a loud vacuum. No flames from me though gender roles in my family growing up we're pretty firm so I can understand.
