Moms with toddlers- please come in

Are you planning to purchase a double stroller for your toddler and newborn? My dd just turned 2 and lately doesn't really want to be in her stroller for any extended period of time. My dd will be 28 mos. old when ds is born so I'm debating whether or not I should purchase a double stroller. I know in the beginning ds will be in the carrier most of the time, but I'm wondering if it makes sense to invest in a stroller for when ds gets a little bigger and we can get out more. Any advice is greatly appreciated. TIA

Re: Moms with toddlers- please come in

  • We haven't made a decision yet. DS is never in a stroller anymore, and probably has not been, on a regular basis, in at least 6 months. He walks wherever we go, and even if we go somewhere like the zoo and we take the stroller, he doesn't want to be in it--- he wants to push the stroller himself, or hold your hand and walk.

However, I worry that if we DON'T get a double stroller, DS will see the baby in it and want to be in it as well. He will be 2 months and 1 day shy of 3 if baby is born on the EDD.

We are probably leaning toward having the stroller "just in case."

  • DD just turned 2 this last week. She is pretty into the stroller for the time being. However, I can see that changing in the next 6 months. We decided to not get a double stroller. The reason behind this is, because I will be baby wearing the new baby a lot and the only place I go that I will not have a second person to push my snap n go is the grocery store. So, we are waiting to see what DD is like when DS is ready for a regular stroller.

  • We were wondering the same things. On a whim, I checked craigslist the other day and found a double jogger for 85. We figured we couldn't go wrong and bought it. Something to think about!

  • My son is 2.5 years old and we still use a stroller or carrier daily. We walk a good distance each day. I actually got a great deal on a City Select double jogger last fall on Craigslist, so I plan to use that. It may need a bar installed if we decide to use the infant carrier in it, but I think we will probably just put the new baby in as is and just recline the seat fully. I'm actually really excited to use it (yes, I'm a little dorky about some of this stuff).

  • That's an awesome idea. Thanks will check out craigslist. Can't go wrong with a deal like that.

  • I love my double strollers. LOOOOOVEEEE it. I got a City Select on clearance for $400 while PG with #2. DD1 still needs a stroller at times. She's a toddler and a runner, totally normal I think, but sometimes she just needs to be confined. I plan to get the glider board for DD1 soon so I have it for #3 comes.

I love that I can use this as a double OR a single when 1 is in school and the other is home with me.

We are in the same boat. Our daughter will be 2 years, 9 months when LO is born and she has NEVER liked her stroller. Before she was born we bought the best on the market and she used it maybe a handful of times. She liked to be carried in our arms until she could walk, then that was it...she was off and run'n! lol. We plan to get just a single stroller this time around and really push for LO to use it, otherwise LO will be in a Moby wrap. I do wonder if our DD will want to be in a stroller though if she sees LO in it... If she does seem more interested, we may consider getting a double, but I have a feeling shes going to be more the "helper" type and want to help push the stroller instead.

  • I guess my DS isn't really a toddler, he'll be about 2 months shy of 4 when DD is born.  I am planning to baby wear when/if DS still wants to be in the stroller.  I just can't see buying a double at this point, because I can't see both kids really wanting to be in it for long.

  • I was plannig a wait and see approach but found a 2 year old baby trend double stroller for $40 so I took it.i figure even if we barely use it, it's worth $40.

  • Well, I guess it is different for everyone's situation.  We did buy a double BOB stroller (after loving the single BOB).  We live on a very bumpy gravel road, so we needed something heavy duty.  I did put DS in the carrier for a lot of our time at first, but once he was 5 months ish and could sit in the stroller I wanted desperately yo just get out of the house and WALK (not toddler stroll).  So, we invested in the double and it has been great.  It is too bulky for mall trips etc, but DD is fine on foot and DS goes in the little umbrella stroller for trips with sidewalks etc.  Maybe a sit n stand stroller would be best for your little ones, so the older child can hitch a ride while standing on the back and your younger one can go in the stroller.

  • We have the Uppa baby Vista for DS. We are buying the second seat for DS so that he can join us on outings and have the option of the stroller. I don't know that we're going to get a side by side double stroller though.

  • I am considering getting the Baby Trend Sit n' Stand Ultra because it should accomodate my infant seat (Chicco Keyfit 30).  I am going to see if they have it at BRU before I make a decision, just so I can see the quality and ease of use.

  • We'll be using a baby carrier/sling for the baby. DS doesn't mind the stroller, but I want him to get more exercise so he'll be walking more. I'm considering one of those backpack/leash things for him since he'd rather be mobile.

We'll probably do this... but I'm not going to buy anything or make any decisions until after DD2 is born.  DD1 currently rides in the stroller still, but a lot can change in the next 6 months.  Plus I can carry DD2 while DD1 rides in the single stroller for at least a few months.

Do you live in NYC?  I see NY in your profile, I'm in the city and that of course complicates matters since we do A LOT of walking.

  • I'm kind of torn about this.  DS will be one month shy of 3 when baby is born.  At first, I plan just to wear baby and let DS have the stroller when needed because that's just easier all around, but I'm concerned that once baby is big enough that I'm going to want them to be in the stroller (especially for longer outings) that DS is still going to need access to a stroller (again, for longer outings).  I'm pretty sure we're going to need some sort of double, but I'm thinking maybe we'll go with the kind that have the sit or stand option for the older kiddo.  Headed towards 4, although I can see DS still needing the stroller sometimes, I don't think he'll need it as often as he does now.  Still, I don't know that we'll always be able to get away without at least having the option for him.

Also, FYI DS is 30 months and he LOVES his stroller.  He still rides in it quite a bit.  Of course everyone is different, but if baby was going to be here now I wouldn't hesitate to buy some sort of double.

  • With an infant and toddler I'd probably get a sit and stand, or a stroller that you could attach a board to. We have a double city mini we will use because DS still generally likes riding in the stroller... DD is in and out. It totally depends on what your needs are though. We are a family always on the go, and I am a SAHM that likes having the double stroller to contain the kids in certain environments, or to make sure I don't need to carry them too much. I plan on mostly wearing LO3 at first.

  • I can think of a couple of reasons to have a double stroller:

1)If you want to do for a walk for exercise then you won't want to have to deal with a toddler wandering off of complaining that she's sick of walking

2)If you are going shopping and need to get stuff accomplished and don't want to chase after a toddler you might want to strap her in.

3)If you are out and about for a long periods of time your toddler might like to have the option of sitting down and riding for a bit rather than walking.  Maybe a sit and stand would work for you?

For me the first point is the reason why we will have a double for sure.

  • My best friend is giving me her sit and stand stroller to use when needed but really I can only see us using it at the zoo or something if DD is tired of walking.  I really don't take DD to the mall or anything anymore because it would be no fun for either of us lol!  We have a jogger we use as a regular stroller for the baby when needed.

We got the joovy sit n stand option and it's good but I find it really hard to push, ESP now that they're 2 and 4 and more often my big one wants to sit up front! they don't end up liking facing backwards. Most of the time I pull out my city mini double. It's so much easier to push and my 4 yr old still fits in it a bit snug, but at least he's facing front.
