3rd Trimester

When to color hair?

I never felt comfortable coloring my hair in the beginning of this pregnancy, I know many people think its fine but I dunno, it made me nervous . Anyway, I am now 38 weeks pregnant and I do plan to breastfeed. So, my question is, is it better to color my hair now or after the baby is born and I'll be breastfeeding? Does it matter? Don't giggle at me, I'm a FTM and a little neurotic :

Re: When to color hair?

  • I did some research & check with my doc. She was fine with me coloring my hair after 1st tri. So I colored my hair at 16 weeks, 25 weeks, & 37 weeks. I wear a painter's mask & open a window to help with the fumes. I believe there is too little evidence to suggest it's absorbed into your bloodstream.

  • Most OB's tell you just to avoid it in the first trimester, after that it's fine pre and post baby.

I just got my hair colored today. I am too vain to go into labor with my roots showing! :) With all the pictures that are taken after LO is born, I gotta try and look presentable!

If being around or having hair chemicals touch my skin for periods of time were bad for baby or breastfeeding, then I would be out of a job.

  • My OB said it was fine both pre-and post-baby.

Which reminds me...my roots are getting bad, I really should get on that.

I lightened my hair two days ago in my bathroom with my three year old watching... I'm also one of those people who think it's no big deal.

  • It is safe to do it now, as PP have stated, as long as you can stand the smell. Just keep it off your scalp if you are overly worried.

  • I waited until after 1st tri and then have colored or done a root touch up (myself, at home) every 4-5 weeks.

  • It's fine during pregnancy, and I've never even heard anyone mention it being an issue with breastfeeding...

  • Any time is not going to be a problem, when you dye your hair there is very little to none of it absorbed through your scalp (it going to your hair won't be absorbed anywhere). It's not harmful, I talked to my dr about it and did a lot of research because I use to dye my hair a lot..You should be fine (:

This. I think it'd be worse if it was a week-long ordeal to dye our hair but for the max of like an hour between coloring, waiting and rinsing baby should be fine :) Don't stress

  • I just dyed my hair last week a color that will hopefully fade well into my natural color so that I don't have to dye with a newborn.

I'm not worried about breastmilk, but I spend a lot of time cuddling with and sleeping near my babies and since the chemical smell sticks around for a while I'd rather not be thinking about my baby sniffing it. I may be a neurotic STM, but that is my reasoning. :) With DS I stopped dying while pregnant and didn't do it again til he was 13 months old, though I have dyed a few times in 2nd and 3rd tri this time around.

  • I did highlights 1st tri and have done all over color every 8 weeks since. You'll be fine. (I checked with my dr even though my sister who is a hair stylist colored her hair (and a thousand other people's) all throughout her pregnancy with my healthy baby nephew Smile

  • I talked to my doctor and have been getting my hair done ever since I was 2 weeks out of my first trimester. She said there is no proof of harm, and its just fine, even when you breatfeed. Always ask your doctor first. I am a FTM, and went straight to my doctor and asked at 8 weeks pregnant.
