Sleep deprived EEG

So we are doing one for DS next week (age 2.5 years) and the instructions say he may only sleep for 3 hours the night before. He typically sleeps 11-12 hours per night. I don't see how it will be physically possible to keep him awake that long. When he gets really tired you can be shouting and blasting music and he will sleep.

Would it be horrible if we let him sleep about 6 hours? That is still half his normal sleep. Thoughts?

Re: Sleep deprived EEG

  • I read some blog or something somewhere that one parent takes their kid to a 24 hour store like Walmart...

  • I would worry he might be able to stay up on 6 hours of sleep if he gets all excited or upset before the test.  To me that seems like you would get him into cranky mode, but not "pass out during the test" mode.  However, you know him best, so I would do what you think will work to have him sleep during the test.

The sleep deprivation part is the WORST!!  Good luck and let us know how it goes.

  • The actual eeg recording only lasts 30 minutes,so he really needs 20-25 minutes of sleep ,so if u think he could fall asleep after having still 6 hrs of sleep, then it should be fine.
  • I would call and ask.  Our neurologist doesn't really believe in doing the totally sleep deprived ones cause 1/2 the time the child falls asleep in the car on the way to the appointment... we have a 45 min. drive.  We just went at nap time and he slept fine.  I'm sure if I did deprive him of some sleep... say 6 hours versus 11 he's definitely have fallen asleep.  What time is your appointment?

  • Our appointment is at 10:30 am. I think we are going to aim to do what the instructions say, the best we can. I am going to stay up with DS until midnight, then DH will get up with him at 3 am.

Our Walmart is a bit suspect, or I would take him there for a while. We have my grandma's 88th b-day dinner that night, so that will give us something to do for a while in the early evening. Wish I could hire Elmo to come party with us all night! :P

    Thanks for the ideas, ladies!
