2nd Trimester

Prepping for Baby and Feeling Inadequate

So I'm starting to try to get read for the incoming little baby (we find out gender on Monday, if baby cooperates).  We have a 5 year old, and we've moved the toys out of the bedroom into the newly appointed play room.  We're looking for bunk beds for the 5yo so I can have the crib mattress back (as he's currently using it in his toddler bed).

I'm feeling emotionally just really up and down.  I'm either really excited or I'm struggling to figure out which way is up.  I want to be happy and in the present, but I keep looking forward to the next steps - finding out gender, when hubby can feel baby move, getting the bedroom reset-up.

I guess I'm just trying to get a little encouragement.  Hubby does the best he can, but I'm an emotional rollercoaster even without the hormones.  And normally I'd have a diet coke with some whiskey and feel better in the morning.  But seeing as caffeine and liquor are off the menu, it's just not going to happen.

And to top it off (this is COMPLETELY irrational), one of our dogs had puppies and she quit producing milk.  So I got all the stuff to bottle feed the puppies.  Guess who won't eat?  The puppies.  I can't even take care of puppies and I'm supposed to take care of a baby along with my other child and husband?  I could totally just break down and cry right now.  I know I'm being silly and hormonal and really, everything will be fine.  Just need someone to remind me of it.

  • It's so tough to get out of that kind of mood.  Try watching something funny on tv or reading.  Hopefully you'll feel better soon.

On another note, why would you let your dog get pregnant while you already have so much to deal with?!!!

  • DH was out of town for two months for work.  I don't usually take care of the dogs, and the litter was a complete accident due to my ignorance.  Our males were fighting so I put one with the females to keep them from fighting.  I didn't know they were fighting because one of the females was in heat.  So now we have puppies.  Not on purpose, but it happened, so I'm trying to take it in stride.

I alternate between excitement and gear when out comes to the idea of the reality of two kids. When I get too freaked out I just try to remember that I was terrified before C was born and that turned out in the end. In fact it was more than just ok out has been amazing and this.will be too.

  • Good luck with the pups!  Let me give you some advice (I'm a vet)- when you have intact males and females in the house they will always find a way..... ;)  I see it over and over again (accidental breedings).  It sounds like you have your hands full as it is so it would be best for you guys to get your dogs fixed!  (at least the female)  That way you will never have to deal with puppies again....not too mention what if your female would have needed a c-section? ($$$)  Now the pups are going to need to be taken care of, dewormed, vaccinated, etc....  just something to think about.   Okay, I will get off my soapbox now.

     Again, good luck!

If you weren't planning to breed dogs, why aren't your dogs neutered/spayed?

  • I have struggled with similar problems emotionally. Not necessarily depressed but easily put out, put down, or stressed. It's easy to get into and hard to get out of the slumps, and I feel like no one wants my company or cares about anything I have to say. It's sucky. I try to surround myself with the most supportive people I can and I try to distract myself as much as possible even just with a silly Disney movie or something. I try to remember that I am a strong woman, that I've made it so far and I'm still doing ok! It's rough going but you will get through!
