Babies: 9 - 12 Months

? for nursing moms

How often does/did your 9 month-old nurse?  Do you have a routine?  I have been nursing pretty much on demand since the beginning, but my DS has been wanting to nurse constantly over the past few weeks, and with a 2.5 year-old (who only nursed for the first 4 months, so this is new territory for me) it is tough to allow this and he gets very upset.  He is teething so we have been giving him teething toys and his paci, but it has still been pretty exhausting.  Just wondering what BFing looks like for other mom-baby pairs at this age.  Thanks!

  • I would say about six times, maybe a little more. When he wakes up, before and after two naps and before bed. More if he's really upset.

  • We're closer to 10 mo now, but he's kept this schedule for awhile. He BFs 6 times a day: before each meal 3 and before he goes to bed 2 naps nighttime = 3. The ones before meals are not always consistent in their timing, but that's generally how our day pans out.

Ok, this mobile version of TB is a PITA! I had parenthesis around my numbers/addition... Sorry if it doesn't make sense. :/

  • A month ago, C was nursing between 6-7 times a day and 2-3 at night.  I've started weaning so he only nurses 3-4 times a day and only once at night.  The rest of the time he gets a bottle of expressed milk.  Hang in there, teething and nursing are a tough mix but your LO will get through it soon and you'll get more rest;)

  • My LO got his first two bottom teeth about 3 weeks ago. During that time, he was nursing 6 times in a 24 hour period. Now that he's not teething, he nurses 4 times a day and STTN. I had oversupply for a long time, so I think he gets a lot from those few feedings. He's not a big solids eater; he really only eats a decent sized dinner.

  • DS is almost 10 months, but we have been on the same schedule since about 7 months.  He nurses 5 times during the day and once overnight.  He nurses as soon as he wakes up, before morning nap, lunch time, late afternoon, before bed, and about 3am.  There isn't a specific dinnertime feeding and he eats solids.  I am trying to increase lunchtime solids so we can maybe drop a feeding.

  • Mine is 9 months and nurses 5 times a day typically. Wakeup, after morning nap, before afternoon nap, late afternoon, then bed time, and sleeps through. If I offer any more than that she tends to reject it. I also have always been an overproducer and she has gained weight great so I know she's getting plenty. She does usually eat 3 good solid meals, but she is pretty much on table foods now so she prob doesn't get down quite as much as some babies who are eating purees (50% ends up on the floor or in the dog's mouth...). However she has an ear infection and six teeth coming in so yesterday she nursed wayyy more often because that seems to be the only thing that makes her feel better!
  • Thanks all for all the great info and support! Have a great weekend!

  • I'm glad you asked this. I think my 11 mo is working on teeth # 3 and 4 and she has stopped STTN and wants to nurse a lot. Before this we were on a schedule of 4-5 feedings a day plus solids but that seems to be turned on it's head lately!
