S/O solids... anyone waiting past 6 months to start?

I have been thinking about the solids thing a lot and I'm considering going a little past 6 months to start. Maybe more like 7 months? Not sure. I would not wait past 8 months though. DD seems fine on just breastmilk. I've read some info that makes me think that later is better. Reference the following (the first section)-

Anyone else thinking about waiting until past 6 months?

  • There is new research showing that delaying solids MIGHT increase risk for allergies. But there are lots of babies who aren't interested in then and go up to and even beyond a year on breastmilk alone. It's totally fine whatever you choose as long as you and LO are happy.

  • I'm just a lurker, but I think it's important to start when you are BOTH ready. DS has been lunging for our food, drinks, etc. for a few months now, but I was nowhere near ready to feed him solids. I waited until his 6 month birthday and my husband and I made a bit of a celebration out of it, took video and pictures, etc. So he just started on monday, and we're doing some BLW and baby oatmeal. So far he has liked watermelon, broccoli trees, and oatmeal. He has not liked nectarines, yams, apples or applesauce. The point is, if I wasn't ready on Monday I would have waited. Plus, it's a big learning curve for babies too, and a big change for their little bodies. Wait if that is what's best for the two of you!

Also, I still think that delaying is better for allergies. There is always conflicting information about things like this, but it makes more sense to me.

Good luck, and have fun when you do start solids!

  • Do what feels right for you. But I think if you do just BM then you might need to do an iron supplement. My pedi mentioned that he needs to be getting iron from his solids after 6 months.

I was told this with DD, but had her iron levels tested and she was fine.  We did try to start solids with her at 6 months but it was probably 8 months before she actually ate anything significant.  I would just offer a few things, no pressure, and let your LO tell you if he/she is ready.

  • We are waiting another month or so.  K has had tastes of solids, but she isn't very interested.  Her doctor said as long as she is satisfied with BM, to wait.  She gets all the nutrition she needs from BM.

  • Babies are fascinating. They all develop sooooo differently. So they are all ready at a different point. My girl was totally 110% ready at a little over five months. I had had every intention of waiting to six months and beyond. But she was ready for food. She has looooved every food we have given her too. E has two teeth, sits great but only rolls to get off her tummy and has zero interest in crawling. There is another baby girl at post who is afull month older than E. She is crawling and walking with assisstance. Yet she has zero teeth and shows little interest in solids. Go with what works for you. If your child was really ready you probably wouldn't be asking this question.

My family is a Foreign Service family. Families like mine are posted in every corner of the globe. We live our lives away from family, friends and the conviences and comforts of home. We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy.  Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.

  • The newest research suggests that waiting until after 6 months can significantly increase risk of all sorts of allergies, inclduing non-food allergies (tree, dander, etc.).  Our pediatrician recommended starting as soon after four months as we were comfortable--but DEFINITELY wanted us to have introduced lots of new foods by the 6 month appointment due to the allergies issue.

Also, the later you wait, the more likely you are to have a picky eating kiddo.

Finally, BM provides a lot of good things, but it doesn't provide the antioxidants and other nutrients provided byfruits and veggies.  While we don't know now exactly the importance of antioxidants to healthy bodies, we do know they are important in the prevention of a variety of diseases.

All this is just something to think about--at the least, talk to your pedi. about your thought process and ask her/his recommendation.
