NBR: Stubborn heartburn, help!

I get heartburn somewhat frequently but it almost always gets better with Tums. Starting a couple of days ago I got a sore throat, and then yesterday it started to feel like heartburn -- burning and pain in my throat and into my chest. Tums are not helping at all. I took Zantac this morning, and more Tums today, not helping. It is seriously uncomfortable and kept me up a bit in the middle of the night too. My doctor's office can't see me til Monday morning, somebody offer me some advice! Is there anything else I can do? Another med I should try? A home remedy? I don't want to feel like this all weekend, blah.

  • I'm sorry.  My dad suffers from heart burn, he is a believer in vanilla ice cream.

  • Milk can actually make it worse. Try eating bread or something to absorb the acid. Stay away from coffee, tea, soda, tomato products.
  • Take an OTC PPI (Prevacid or Prilosec...I prefer Prilosec). It gets to the root of the issue and doesn't just cover it up like Zantac or Tums.  Had to take Prilosec during both pregnancies because of terrible reflux.  I feel your pain. GL!

This is what I would recommend also.  DH has taken both and they worked well for him but I had to switch him to Prevacid because he was getting headaches from the Prilosec.
