Looks Like I'll Be Joining You: How Did You Tell Your Family and Friends?

So it looks like I will be joining you...a total shock but beautiful surprise.DD will be 19 months old and DS will be just shy of his 4th birthday when LO arrives. While I know I shouldn't care I must admit that I am worried about the reaction from family and friends. Any suggestions/stories?

  • I had my DS wear a shirt that says "GUESS WHAT?" on the front, and the back said "I'M GOING TO BE A BIG BROTHER!" then his name was underneath. I bought it on Etsie when we were trying.

It was a big hit and a huge surprise. :)

  • I basically just came out and told my family and close friends.  For my extended family, I took a pic of the other 2 wearing shirts that said "I'm going to be a Big Brother again," and "I'm going to be a big sister" from CafePress.com.

My first 2 were the 2u2, and honestly I have had far more negative comments the 3rd time - so if you get some not so nice comments, I think it is more the 3 kids thing than the 2u2 thing.  Everyone has an opinion on more than 2 kids - You are going to be so busy, It will be really hard, You already had a boy and girl, why more?  Hopefully that won't happen for you!  And FWIW, mostly it was people I work with or random strangers that make these comments (now that I am showing).  My family and friends have been supportive!

  • Congrats! I wrote a little poem about DD becoming a big sister and took a picture of her with it. Then showed it to family. Everyone was really surprised but happy for us. My dad, being the joker he is, asked us if we knew how to make it stop. But that was the worst of it and all in fun. GL sharing your news!

  • Congrats!  I'm so excited for your family.  We actually had more fun (and better reactions) from telling our friends than our family.  Even when we announced our first pregnancy my in-laws had a less than stellar reaction so I knew not to get my hopes up for #2.  I just had my husband call his mom and tell her in a very casual conversation.  No cute shirt, no pictures, etc.

When we announced that baby #2 was a girl we took a cute pic of our son and puppies with a pink background and decor and posted it on Facebook.  Honestly, we didn't even bother to call his parents and just figured the news would spread to them soon enough.  (After his brother and father didn't even say "congrats" when we announced our pregnancy I didn't even want to waste my time telling them the gender.)

I'm so happy with our beautiful growing family and happy with our timing.  Be prepared for a few negative reactions both from people you know and complete strangers.   Just enjoy this amazing, beautiful blessing and do your best to ignore the rude comments.

Wishing you a healthy and happy pregnancy!

  • We conceived #2 right around the 4th of July, so we are calling him/her Baby BoomBoom until birth. I want to get body paint and do a belly painting with fireworks and a tiny baby in the middle and then post it on Facebook. A few of my friends already know, along with my family, but most people don't so I think it will be pretty cool :) One of the moms I know was telling me about a couple who held a jar of Prego pasta sauce and the guy had a shirt with an arrow pointing to his wife's tummy. I thought that was a cute idea! You could do something like a poem: "One, two, weeeeee!!! We're expecting baby #3!" And have it surrounding the first ultrasound picture. I come from a family of three and would love to have more than that! If anyone says anything mean or disparaging, just respond with, "My husband loves me so much and still thinks I'm sexy, I just couldn't keep him off me!" They'll be the ones blushing instead of you ;)
