Today a parent brought in grocery store cupcakes for their child's birthday for the entire class. We didn't find out until DD told us tonight, "I had a cupcake! With green frosting!"
Since the center was still open, DH called and they had to go check the ingredients and call him back. It doesn't sound like they even checked...let alone the whole "may contain" situation.
Now I'm freaking out that she isn't safe with anything. Am I overreacting? How do we handle this going forward? We've had multiple conversations about this food allergy and the center is supposedly nut free...but if they aren't checking...
Re: Daycare situation...Help.
Yeah, they should be checking. My DD's teachers always checked. If they knew another parent was dropping something off, they'd let me know and have me check. For the future, you can have them keep something there for her for times like that, mini oreos are a good choice if she's okay with soy. My DD's school would even let me keep cupcakes in their freezer if I wanted to.
Definitely have a talk with them.
My twins are 5! My baby is 3!
DS#2 - Allergic to Cashew, Pistachio, Kiwi
DS#3 - Allergic to Milk, Egg, Peanut, Tree Nuts and Sesame
This! Offter solutions that work for everyone too. So she's not left out if you have "spare" treats for her, she's still get to participate and you'll know that when she does get a treat it is safe. Good Luck!
and as soon as possible. DS has severe allergies and our daycare is very good with them. They even pay snacks just for him. Give them some good background info. Maybe they just don't understand food allergies and how to deal with them.
Hell yeah!
You are not overreacting -- I would react the same way. If they are truly nut free -- then cupcakes/ cakes should be be brought in from the outside at all - or you should be informed so you can provide an appropriate alternative for her (which means they need to implement a notice policy).
I taught for many years in both private and public schools and in daycare settings....this is a HUGE breech of contract and they are violating practices that are mandated by law! I would throw a hissy fit if that were my daughter because we'd have ended up in the hospital by about the fourth hour after consuming the product!
The extreme sides of mixing up foods or giving a child a food they shouldn't have is breastmilk. People get FIRED outright for that and centers get HUGE fines!
They legally cannot feed your child ANYTHING off of the normal menu without your permission and if she is on an allergy list I would suggest sending her to school with a nice bright pretty ribbon bracelet around her wrist..something catchy to remind them and put the same color sticker on her cubby and on her drinking cup if you are allowed to! If she has a name plate on the table or at her spot..do the SAME thing and suggest that they research color coding allergies this way to protect other children.
Ask schools who are peanut free how they went about this process! There is a learning curve but this was pure laziness. Oh man if my assistant fed one of my students something that wasn't allowed..heads would ROLL! I fired one my second year of teaching because she thought it ok to sneak a child a pack of candy that was FULL of Red dye. The child had a severe Phenol sensitivity and by the end of the day she was headbutting, biting, screaming, scratching...and just violent. Her parents dropped off a healthy happy child who had been away from Phenols for YEARS and boom..they get a purple/blue..swollen eyed child with scratch marks, self induced bruising and foul language/behavior!
