"gift bag" of breast milk: explained.

In case you are wondering, using a gift bag to store breast milk is FANTASTIC.  You simply cut a slit in the bottom side of the bag, so that when you go to get milk out...you pull from the bottom which is the oldest milk that needs to be used.  Genius!  Here is a video explaining it...

Re: "gift bag" of breast milk: explained.

  • Not that I have a freezer stash or anything, I have a question. When I froze my day worth of milk I had in the fridge for when we all went on vacation for a week and therefore wouldn't need it, all my bags stuck together. If I were to put them in a gift bag, how would I avoid the bags from freezing together?

Was the milk cold before you put it in the baggies?  Because I haven't had a problem with them sticking together if the milk all gets cold in the fridge and then I put it in bags to freeze it.

  • I didn't watch the video(I have limited data allowance for internet usage), but I get the general concept. Anyways I pump into the bottles attached and then pour into milk storage bags. I put them in a cooler bag with an ice pack and stick the cooler in the fridge at work until I go home. When I get home I put the bags into a tray in the fridge. After they were there for about a day I realized I'd need to freeze them to keep them in date while we were out of town so I laid them flat, stacked them in my tray, and stuck it into the freezer.

  • I had read about this happening so I put the BM bags into baggies before I freeze them.

  • When I lay them out to freeze them, I do not stack them. I stack them once they are completely frozen. I need to do this, because I have them stacked, but they always fall over.

  • I just did this! Works great.
  • I do this too. I have a bag at work (daycare where she is) and one at home. The bags do rip over time, but I didn't reinforce them with tape. My bags still do stick together but I go in and separate them on a regular basis. They don't stick where they are really stuck though.

  • It works awesome! I have 2 gift bags and a Bath Body Works bag full in my freezer right now.

I always freeze a days worth in the upstairs freezer unstacked so the don't stick together.

  • I do this trick, too! So nice to have everything neatly organized and in chronological order!
