I can't believe I am that stupid

While on maternity leave, I've been casually looking at job openings. I don't hate my job, but I wouldn't say no to bettering my condition, you know?

I created a new email address because I've been using the same email address since I was 16 and well, it doesn't look so good when you're trying to convince someone you're a serious candidate for their company.

Anyhoo, there was this one position that seemed to be a perfect match for me. Like "omg this has my name written all over it". So I sent my resume and waited. Never heard back from them. Until I suddenly realized a fw minutes ago that I haven't checked my new email in a while.

I had ONE new email.

It was from that company I had sent my resume to. They wanted to know more about me.

The email was from July 12.

D'OH!

(On a side note, I'm not really upset. I'm a firm believer of "it will happen if it's meant to be",  so I figure this just wasn't meant to be.)

And now, feel free to share your own embarrassing job-hunting story.

  • If you have Yahoo email, you can actually have two different names for the same account. I didn't want to change my email address after I got married, but also didn't want my email address to be my maiden name, so I added the "alias" and email sent to either address is delivered to the same account.

I don't know if other email providers have something similar since I've only ever used Yahoo.

And embarrassing/dumb job story... I had a job offer to teach at a local university. I didn't really WANT it because it would have involved driving downtown four days a week for an hour-long class. So I would have spent more time in the car every day than actually teaching. I also couldn't figure out what to do for childcare.

So in a frantic effort to find something else so I wouldn't have to take that job, I sent my resume to another university that would have been much better (1/2 mile from my house, only have to go once/week). They give me all of the papers to fill out and are going to hire me, so I turn down the other position. When I went to turn in all of my paperwork, the lady is like, "So this will be for the winter term beginning in January..." Well, we're moving in December, so that kind of doesn't work for me.

I went back and double-checked my correspondence and everything I sent said I was looking for a job for the fall term.

    So no job for me.

  • Oh no!  Well, you can always reply back and see if it is still open.  I know several people on the job hunt, as well as people working in the recruiting field, and things are SO SLOW in the summertime with people in an out on vacations.  It literally takes a month to line up an interview between confirming the candidate's availability, and finding a day where all of the recruiters and hiring managers are actually in the office at the same time to conduct the interview.  So there is an excellent chance the job is still open!

  • Thanks ladies.

You wanna know something ironic? I just went and looked at my sent emails. They emailed me a little over a month after I sent my resume, and then that email asked that I write back within 24 hours.

    Um no.

If you're going to ask me to answer promptly, the least you could do is do the same yourself.

At least now I REALLY don't feel bad about the missed opportunity. A company that shows so little regard to its (future) employees is not a place I'm interested in.
