I had my twins 7/20/12 and due to their size, high location and safety they did a vertical incision. This incision has led to multiple complications for me. I'm on the upswing now hopefully. Katarina Reilly and Henry Charles VI are doing great.(6 lb, and 7 lb 3 oz) born at 36 w 1 d. But I was wondering if anyone else had a rough recovery?
Re: Curious- anyone else get a vertical incision?
Did they do a vertical incision externally?
I had a major uterine surgery before my twin pregnancy, so I would never be able to have a vaginal delivery. During the c-section for my twins, the OB did a bikini line incision for Baby A and then realized Baby B was lodged under my ribcage tighter than thought. He then did a vertical incision as well but the vertical was only done internally. Recovery was tough. It was easier than my uterine surgery, but harder than what other c-section moms told me. I think it had to do with the vertical incision as well as not sleeping because of BFing and overdoing it caring for twins and a toddler with little help.
On the bright side, I had a plain, boring c-section with my singleton in Dec and it was a piece of cake
Seriously, the difference was huge! The nurses had to pretty much force me out of bed and to walk around after the twins. After my singleton, I was walking around the hospital less than 24 hours after delivery with no meds.
It's rough, but it will heal. Get as much sleep as you can and be gentle and patient with yourself. It takes time but you'll get there.
yes.
my external incision is horizontal, but internal... its a mess... I have both a horizontal and a vertical incision.
Dr. got baby A out fine with the horizontal. But Baby B was wedged up under ribs and in major distress. Dr. had no choice but cut a vertical line to get Baby B out ASAP. It was an emergency C-section to begin with and tons of complications for both babies after birth.
Not to scare you.... sorry.... my recovery was from hell. it was at least 6 months before I could get up off the floor without using both hands / arms to pull myself up. I had no muscle tone in my abdomen. None. No strength in my core to get up/down. I was in horrible pain for first 4 months. Sharp pains internally for a long time. Finally at 1 year later, I am just starting to feel normal.
dr. said I should not get pg again for 2 years if possible and any other babies have to be scheduled c-section and I am high risk for pg.
I had an internal vertical and horizontal like you- not for my twins but during my emergency section with my 25 weeker. She was transverse and high up and they couldn't get her right away with the horizontal.
My healing time was not nearly as long as yours- but it was worse than with my twins (born 3 years later) and like you, I was told all other deliveries will be a scheduled c-section and I can't labor.
