Ladies, please tell me why...

my doc would schedule me to be induced Monday night, as opposed to Tuesday morning.  What are your thoughts?  Should I ask for Tuesday morning?  I should have asked at the appointment, but it didn't cross my mind!  Thanks so much!

Re: Ladies, please tell me why...

  • I would rather be induced in the morning, not at night. At least if you are induced in the morning, you will get some sleep before having those babies. If you are induced at night, you'll be up all night long.

  • I totally agree with you!  I can't imagine why she would choose Monday night.  The only thing I can come up with, is that it fits her schedule.  Should I ask her to change it?

I don't think it would hurt to ask

  • Yeah I would ask to reschedule it. You aren't going to be able to eat all day long if your c-section is scheduled at night - that could be considered a form of torture for a pregnant woman Wink

  • If you're being induced and they're starting you off with cervadil, then they'll insert it and monitor you overnight.  Contractions won't start right away, so you should be able to rest and get some sleep during the night.

  • Thank you for all your replies.  Both babies are head down at this point, so we are attempting vaginal delivery.  I see her Monday morning to check to see how far dilated.  I will ask then why it is set for Monday night.  I think my nerves are just getting me panicked!

  • Your doctor most likely wants to check you in the night before and do a slow induction.  That's what mine did.  The night before I just had a couple doses of Cytotec to continue ripening my cervix.  By the morning when he came to break my water I had dilated ~2cm while I slept.  I was already there and ready to go.  Easy peasy.  Never even needed any Pitocin!  I would definitely go in the night before.   However, just to be sure I would call the office and verify that is his plan.  I seriously doubt a doctor would want you in active labor and risk having to get up in the middle of the night to rush to the hospital, but I could be wrong.

  • I agree with the others... your OB probably wants you to check in at night to get your cervix softened and get things started slowly. When I was induced for my first pregnancy, I checked in at midnight for a cytotec induction and then I was given ambien so that I could get some rest until my OB came in at 6:30 a.m. to break my water - that's when the real fun started. Thanks to the ambien, I was knocked out cold for several hours and probably got better sleep than I would have at home (because I was so anxious). I think I got better sleep than my DH too :) GL!

  • My docs wanted to induce me in the evening. I asked (firmly) to be induced in the morning instead, and they said it was fine. They knew my L&D would be quick b/c I was already dilated 4-5cm. I wasn't about to not sleep all night, and have my 2-night hospital stay start at the end of a day, and have the hospital kitchens closed after I delivered. I didn't have any major medical issues that necessitated an immediate induction. My kids were born around noon, after an induction that started at 5am. I stayed the night the night before the induction. I think it worked out better that way.

This. I was GBS+ so they had me come in the night before to start antibiotics (just as a precaution in case labor went really quickly, to make sure I got enough abx in) and I asked if they could do Cervidil at the same time. But the Pitocin and contractions--the "official" induction as I thought of it--didn't start till the Tuesday morning. (Btw, if your dr mentions Cytotec, be sure to ask about Cervidil instead; it's more expensive but safer.)

Ditto this - Cervidil is safer - Cytotec shouldn't be used for inductions. I did Cervidil on a Monday night and had early in the morning...on Wednesday. But that's not typical!

  • If you're totally not ready to go then, they will prep you, give you something to eat and something to help you rest.  Instead of not sleeping, not eating and not being prepare mentally, they will help you do all of that.

Enjoy letting them take of you because it will never be "me" anymore.  It will always be about the babies. GL hon.

Oh geez, I totally read that wrong! Yeah, I'd rather be induced at night - they assume labor will be many hours and they don't want to be delivering in the middle of the night if they can help it.

    Good luck!

  • It took me 22 hours from check in to birth - I was glad I was induced at night.  It meant that the busy, active part of labor happened during the day.  The first dose of Misoprostol only dialated me 1cm in 4 hours.  The second dose kicked me into active labor.

I had Cytotec and it worked just fine.  No issues.  I'm sure all doctors have their reasons for using particular medications over others.

  • Exactly what everyone said.  If your cervix is "unfavorable" for vaginal delivery - as many first time mom's are - the ripening agent will help increase your chances for a vaginal delivery significantly.  However ripening agents get things going, and typically many people are able to still sleep through the night.  if you start with a ripening agent during the day, generally your pitocin will start that night (meaning no sleep that night).   inductions anyway can take 24-48 hours to have your babies, and that can be normal, just to try to work with your body as much as possible.

cytotec/misopristol should be used carefully, but many people would argue it's even more effective then cervidil.  both can be used very safely with careful monitoring. cytotec is given every 4-6 hours and that can mean more up and down for the RNs/docs vs cervidil stays in for 12 hours. often times that influences people's decisions also.  cervidil also costs >100x more.

    hope that helps.

  • I was induced w/my 1st 2 singleton pregnancies. I went in around 10 pm that night.  W/my 1st, they started cervidil that night.  W/both, they started pitocin usually around 7 am.  After that, it was about 4 hours and less than 2 hours until I delivered.  My labors were fast.  I did not sleep well at all both those nights that I went in.

  • With my first LO I was induced at night.I think it depends on how much they need to do.So if you need cervidel and that has to work for a while, they may need you to come at night so it can start working. That is what happened in my case.

Of course it works or they wouldn't use it, but it is controversial for a reason, which is why I encouraged people to ask/look into it and find out their options. Just because some drs do something doesn't mean it should never be questioned; there are a lot of things in the obstetrics field especially where some of the most common practices are not evidence-based. And in medicine in general, everything has risks and benefits and some patients like to educate themselves and be able to weigh the risks versus benefits along with their dr before making a decision; after all, it's the patient and not the dr who has to live with the results. I would encourage people to do their own research and decide what they are comfortable with.

  • I had Cervadil on a Tuesday night at 800pm. Was monitored for an hour and sent home with instructions to come back if I had regular and timeable contractions. My induction was to be the following day but I was "on-call". They weren't able to accomodate my induction until 1100pm Wednesday night due to staffing and general business in the unit. I got next to no sleep Tuesday night and none on Wednesday. I didn't sleep until sometime Thursday afternoon, well after the babies had been born. Super sleep deprivation sucked.
