Big babies

I had my 28 week MFM growth scan today and both babies are measuring large.  Baby A is estimated at 3.6 and B is 3.8.  That's up from 2.4 and 2.0, respectively, four weeks ago and in the high 70s / low 80s for percentile.

The Dr told me I should "limit carbs, if that's something that you like to eat."  What pregnant woman *doesn't* like carbs?

So now I'm wondering... what's the downside to having big babies?  I thought we *wanted* them to be big.  The only issue I can think of is if Baby B is bigger going into a vaginal birth, there might an issue if he goes breech.  Am I missing something?  If they keep gaining at this rate, my estimate has them at around 6 and a half pounds by 38 weeks.  I'd be quite happy with that.

Also, I'm 5'11" and the donor we used is 6'2".  That's gotta count for something... it's not just 7 pounds of "ice-cream" babies in there!

Re: Big babies

  • As long as you and babies are healthy and no GD, why not keep doing what you're doing? Sounds like you are doing great! My girls have been hanging around the 55th percentile and I'm very happy about that! Keep growing those babies!

  • I wouldn't worry about it. Growth slows down toward the end and they are rarely the size estimated anyway. You want big healthy babies.

  • Meh.  My doctor told me all along that I was going to have big babies.  They were born full term NOT big.  The estimates I had were WAY off.  It happens a lot.  That's just my 2 cents worth.

However limiting carbs can't really be a bad thing.  I'm not sure that I really think it will slow down the growth of your babies this late in the game, though.  Of course...I'm not a doctor or a dietician either, so there you go.  ;)

  • High 70s/low 80s sounds perfectly normal and reasonable; was he concerned that they had a huge spike in growth? U/s can also be off by up to a pound in either direction so ... I don't know. I don't know that I'd change much; just keep eating a healthy, balanced, protein-rich diet. Yay for healthy babies! :)

  • I agree! Hooray for big babies! I say keep doing what you are doing. I have also heard that it is harder to eat well later because there is not much room for your stomach, increase in heartburn, etc. Plus, so many of the weight estimates are wrong. I wouldn't want to take the advice, limit my diet, then have them born very small, that would feel horrible. I would rather have big babies- like you said, what is so bad about that? Research says the more they weigh, the better.

  • My babies are a little smaller then yours but not much at my 28 week on Monday A was 3.0 and B 2.12. My doc said keep doing what I am doing. It looks like with your hieight and Donor's hieght you are probly meant to have big babies... Congrats on doing such a good job growing them!

  • I'm 5'10, DH is 6'0. My babies were born at 38+6, Baby A weighing  (18.5" long) and Baby B weighing 6lb 15oz (20" long), so your babies sound right on track to me. I started at 155 and got up to 220, no diabetes or anything.
