"Spoiled" Sippy Cup?

This may sound like a dumb question, but I feel comfortable asking you mamas here. Do sippy cups go bad?  Giselle's day care center gave me her sippy cup & said it was "spoiled".  When I smelled the inside of it, it smelled like fermented juice.  They requested I give them another one, which I did.  But I am inclined to think they are not washing it properly or frequently enough.  I have several sippy cups at the house and none of them smell bad in the inside.  I did put the "spoiled" sippy cup in the dish washer & I can already tell that fermented juice smell is fading away.

What say you?

Re: "Spoiled" Sippy Cup?

  • I have had sippy cups "spoil" but I would have to agree that this happens because of poor washing.  That being said, I think it's a good idea to get rid of cups after 6-9 months.

  • I put some vinegar on them every 4 weeks or so to make sure they don't get a funky smell.  I have a spray bottle filled with vinegar that I spray everything down with with it and leave them all in the sink to air dry.  After that I wash like usual and I don't get the 'smell'.  However if something already has a small I put it in a 50/50 water vinegar solution for at least 12 hours (overnight) and wash like normal and voila good as new.

Great pointer!  Do you use straight up regular white vinegar?

  • Yup, I buy a giant jug from Costco because I use it so often!  Makes a great deodorizer for plastic bibs too, I just spritz some on after washing them every week or so and let it air dry and they don't get that dirty sponge smell anymore.

I'm a firm believer that vinegar is the best thing ever. I always add some to my diapers to keep them from getting any build-up.

  • I bet they are just rinsing it with water.  It wouldn't smell if it was washed properly every time it is used.
