How hard would it be? (travel question)

How hard would it be to fly from CA to Colorado by myself with two 7 month olds?

My husband has a 80 percent chance of being sent to CO to help rebuild some transformers that were destroyed in the fires.  He will be there for 4 months.

If I used the double snap and go and bought both babies their own seats and left them in their infant car seats, do you think I could make it work?   Oh dear god, this does not sound like a fun trip.

  • I haven't done it but what I have learned over the last almost 11 mos is you really can do anything.  If you need to do it, then go.  It won't be pleasant probably but you'll figure out the best way to make it work.

I did it by myself with two 6 week olds. We did exactly what you are planning to do-both girls were in their car seats, we had seat tickets purchased for all three of us, and I bought a used DSNG specifically for the trip. I know there is a big difference in activity level between my babies when I did it and yours, but it can be done! I even fed both girls and changed their diapers during the flight. (One of the flight attendants had to sit in my seat while I took the girls one at a time to the bathroom. I had no idea they had changing tables. Guess I never needed to know these things before!)

Just a couple of things I can pass along: I had to pay $45 to be able to have assigned/guaranteed seats together. Book early! Obviously you can't sit in the emergency exit row with your kids, but you also can't sit in front of the exit row. (At least per the Flight Attendant on my flight.) She made me change rows. Also, and this was the most annoying change, I could not sit in between my girls because a car seat could not be in the aisle seat. I had to lean from the aisle seat to the window seat in order to feed them both.

I asked for a gate pass for my mom to be able to help me through security and to my gate but they wouldn't do it. Instead they had an airline employee help me. It sucked because I had some stranger having to hold my babies or stand with one while I went through with the other. I felt like I had to keep my eyes on 4 places-each baby, the stroller and then my stuff going through X-ray then sitting there unattended for 10 minutes. On the other hand, since we had an airline employee, we got to skip the line.

TSA didn't give me a hard time at all with my diaper bag and carry-ons. I had powdered formula, bottled water, a breast pump,  a squirt bottle with water in it (we don't use wipes) and a plastic container full of baking soda (we put a little in the water for diaper changes).

That's all I can think of. I survived a 30 hour car ride to see my family and then a flight home alone with the girls. I think you'll be fine. :)

  • Is there someone that could go with you?  This would at least help you in the airport and logistically speaking and maybe they could watch the babies one night so you and your DH could have a nice date night.

I know you would need to pay for their ticket and lodging but it might be worth just having that help.
