Oral vs Shot - Vitamin K

Debating which route to go - my MW offers both options. We are having a girl so circumcision is not a concern, not that we would anyway.

Any advice, articles, research you can share?

Re: Oral vs Shot - Vitamin K

  • I'm so glad you asked this question.

I'm having trouble reaching a consensus with my husband. We have an appointment in about an hour and we're supposed to tell our midwife whether we're doing the intramuscular shot or an oral dose of the IV version of vitamin K. They don't offer the real oral version of the vit K at our hospital, so those are our options. Honestly, I feel like I'm being scared into choosing between these two options because our original plan was to refuse vit K unless there was trauma. We're not circumcising, so that was never an issue. This has been the hardest decision so far... we're still not sure what to do.

  • We did the shot, because I knew that I would not follow up with all of the doses of the oral med.

My MW group said that the Vit K was the only thing that they would fight me on if I wanted to decline it. The consequences are catastrophic even though the chance of it is extremely low. I would not be able to live with myself if something bad happened. I guess, I don't think that E suffered Psycological trauma from the shot. If he did, he's stuffing his emotional distress way down deep.

  • I was totally comfortable with the shot. I didn't feel it was worth the effort to do oral, and I didn't find that it was as well studied and supported by the literature.

We don't do newborn vaccines here, so that was the only shot he got. And then the heel prick at 24 hours to check for weird metabolic disorders and such. The single shot didn't seem too traumatic.

  • We did the shot. I don't know much about it, but SIL drank nettle tea in her pg instead of giving the shot.

  • I don't have an article to cite, but I'm a MW & was always taught that in order for the body to use the oral dose, the baby's gut needs to be conolized with bacteria- this is why the f/u dose is required. not sure if that helps you- i've had people decline it all together.

  • We did shot w/ DS1 in the hosp. He had a difficult birth, so no qualms. We are doing oral w/ DS2 w/ CPM (state law prevents her from doing the shot). We could've gotten the shot at urgent care, but that wasn't appealing  after our non-medicalized birth and the birth was pretty smooth. DH wasn't ok with declining all together beacuse of the "what-if" factor and because there was no downside to the oral since we'll have MW visits at those times. I don't think the oral is as effective, but since we are talking about super-low risks anyway, I feel fine about it.

Any chance you could order the oral kind on your own and bringing it to self-administer?

  • How is the oral one administered? Does it involve a nipple? That would sway me against it.

The shot is very quick. Compared to what just happened, it's probably NBD....we did the shot.
