September 2012 Moms

If you work from home, come on in :)

For those who work from home, what are doing for childcare? Are you planning on having the baby with you at home, are you doing daycare, a relative, ect.

I WFH and am curious what other mommas like me are going to be doing. I'm not completely sure but I think we plan on having me watch him a couple days out of the week and MIL will watch him 2 or 3 days.

I send DS to daycare. I think having a nanny would be too distracting for me. I worked on New Years Eve last year and having DS and DH home was really difficult for me to keep my mind on work.

  • I am only working from home for my maternity leave because we are such a small company that there is no paid leave for us. My boss is so very generous that he is going to pay me while I am at home to work.

I plan on having the baby and my 2 year old with me, this way we can save on daycare and have some extra money to stay afloat. My DH has agreed to put my 2 year old in daycare once or twice a week if I become overwhelmed. For now they will be home with me.

  • LO will be home with me but DH and I plan (hope) to pull "shifts". He comes home for lunch everyday, and is usually home at 4:00. I don't have set hours and can work whenever so we're hoping things will work out.

We'll probably do some sort of part-time daycare next year when he's a bit older.

  • I WFH but I am taking a year off so I have not looked into options yet.  But, my company requires I either have to take her to day care or have a full time nanny with a completely quiet/separate place for me to work.  If I was going back to work after 6 weeks or so I would probably get a nanny at first and then take her to day care when she was a bit older.  But because she will be one by the time I go back I will most likely take her to day care.

ETA:  There is no possible way I could do my job while caring for a child, so even if my company did not require full time care, I would still need to get it.  I am on conference calls quite often and could not have a crying baby in the background.  I also just would not be able to concentrate enough on what I was doing to do it effectively.

  • My mom watched DD while I still worked in the office, and nothing changed about that when I started working from home. Occasionally I'll keep her home if she's sick and only work when she naps or something, but then I still have the rest of the day to make up or take vacation time before. Keeping her home just doesn't work. She's up for around an hour each morning while I work before they leave, and sometimes it's really hard to get much done during that time, even with DH here.

  • I only work a few hours a day, and I work while the kids are napping or when DH gets home.

  • I work from home and my husband is a fire fighter and he works 24 hr shifts. So when he is home he will watch the baby while I work.  Once the baby gets a little older (5-6 months) we have a day care in mind that will work with my husbands schedule. So for the 1-2 days a week we could do a half-day, day care.

Also if my husband is going to work overtime or pick up a detail, the day care just asks for notice the night before.  Granted we do not always know the night before about overtime, but my MIL lives 10 minutes away and is willing to watch the baby for a few hours if I have calls already scheduled.

My job is somewhat flexible, as long as the work is getting done, it does not always matter what time of the day it is. :)

  • I'm planning to hire a nanny. I do have her on a list for a daycare center down the street, but ideally I'll have someone here watching her so I can see her on breaks to nurse and just satisfy my need to be near her. Finding someone is the big challenge...

  • I work from home now, but it's a little different because it's not full time.

Typically, I have a weekly conference call and then 10-15 hours of work that I can do anytime. The LO will be home with me. I'm hoping to either a) get stuff done while he's sleeping or b) have DH chill with him while I get some stuff done. Or if that's not working out, I'll get my mom to come over or hire a babysitting for a few hours to get my stuff together.

  • I work from home and have a nanny come watch DD. At first my MIL was helping but that opened a HUGE can of worms because she did not respect our requests on what to do with DD and almost ended up in a fight between DH and his mom. I wouldn't depend on your MIL for 2-3 days a week unless you two get along well and she is the type to listen to what you want and follow your instructions.

I also would not bet on working from home and taking care of the baby at the same time. This is possible the first couple of months at most because the baby is sleeping so much. After that your productivity will be shot because you cannot multi-task work and raising a child and expect either of them to be a good quality job. You certainly wont be getting a full 8 hours of work in on any day unless you kick it into high gear at night and DH takes care of the baby.

I recommend a nanny if you have space in your home so that she/he and your child are not on top of you or day care if you do not have enough space at home. You can also check out in home daycares near you if you prefer.

  • When DD was born, I WFH and sent her to an in-home DC 4 days a week for the 1st year, then 5 days a week after.

My co-worker had a baby a few months after me, and he used to get up early to work before his wife went to work, did minimal work in the mornings with his son there, then dropped his son at his parent's house each afternoon.

Our schedules were flexible, but I honestly could not get much (if any) work done with DD here.

  • We have DCPs come to our home. 2 days is my MIL, 1 day is a sitter, and 2 days it's just me & him. Those days I work when he naps & after he goes to bed. I also work almost every night after he goes to sleep to make up the time.

Up until he was about 6 months old though, I did have a DCP for those 2 days that are currently just me & him.
