Inappropriate hugging update

So Charlie gets all huggy at inappropriate times/places, especially when he's tired.  (I mentioned this in an earlier post)

Ran into another mom who's kid does the same thing.  She's working on a 3-count with hers....  1-2-3 Let Go!

We'll see how that works.

Re: Inappropriate hugging update

  • Can I ask how it's inappropriate? How old is he? If its when he's tired, does he just need loveys to go to sleep?
  • Loading the player...
  • Frye... he's not quite three.   When he's around other kids (playground, library time, etc), he just walks up to kids and puts them in a bearhug and won't let go.  Usually freaks the other kids out, of course, or at least confuses the crap outta them.   Sometimes he'll even knock them over and sit on them.

When it happens at our playgroup (with friends), we mommies try to let the kids work the situation out for themselves, unless the "victim" starts to cry.   "Phillip, tell Charlie to stop hugging you." etc    If it's strangers, I immediately break it up and apologize.  Definitely been an interesting study to see how the kids try to resolve it.

He's been doing this for a few weeks now and I think he just is tired and wants the other kids to "slow down" so he grabs ahold of them to keep them from running away from him.   Don't think it's a "lovey" thing.

That seems like a good idea. And is it just a needing the other kids to calm down thing? IDK but I was always the smallest kid by a huge margin and it was like I attracted hugs and attention from bigger kids. None of it was mean or violent, but bigger kids were always hugging me, carrying me and generally being super physical with me, almost like I was a doll or something. So, in that sense, it WAS like I was a lovey like FFR suggested.

I guess my question is, are the kids he's hugging smaller than C?

  • It's kind of random.  Mostly the kids his size or just slightly bigger.  But he does it to little ones sometimes, too.  That's when he gets too aggressive and they get knocked over.

I am hoping this is just a phase... but I need to figure out how to remedy it.

  • Ahhhh!! I thought he was hugging you. I was like, how is hugging you inappropriate....

That makes sense. Let me know how it works. Henry seems like he is going to be a tough one to handle.
