What can I feed my baby who only has two teeth?

I need some ideas for mealtime and snacks for my 13 months old son. He only has two bottom teeth and he has trouble eating the things that are on our plates for dinner. We offer him what we have on our plates first so that it gives him the opportunity to practice eating, but we usually end up having to give him baby food. The poor little guys mashes, but without any teeth to keep the food in, it ends up flying out of his little mouth:) Anyway, I need some more ideas, I feel like I keep giving him the same foods over and over- ravioli, green beans, macaroni, etc. Most 13 months I know have lots of teeth and are eating pretty much everything- our Dr. said he'll eat more and more as he gets more teeth, but I want to make sure he's getting the nutirition he needs.Any suggestions? Thanks, Ladies!

Here are some of the things my kids liked at that age:

    peanutbutter and jelly
    grilled cheese
    hummos and crackers
    cubed cheese
    baked potatoes
    baked sweet potatoes
    baked squash
    bananas
    avacado
    canned fruit
    peaches
    pears
pasta (my kids loved the little wheels at that age)
    refried beans on tortilla
    chunky soups
    quesadillas (sp?)
low sugar oatmeal cookies (make them with whole wheat flour and half the sugar...they don't really taste like cookies)
    oatmeal
    yogurt
    applesauce

leftovers and eggs are also always good.

  • Everything Alli said, but remember to make the baby food ally chunky so that he gets used to all the textures.

  • By that age both of mine were on table food full time and had less than eight teeth. Keep feeding him what you are eating he will get it.
  • Look up 'baby led weaning' or ask around on the attachment parenting board.  My LO has two teeth and she PLOWS through food.  She ate 2 large triangles of watermelon, half a slices of cantaloupe and a whole graham cracker for breakfast today.  It's all about shapes and sizes.  FWIW, she does eat with two to three fingers jammed in her mouth most of the time, I think it keep the food from coming out.  :)
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • Number of teeth doesn't really matter in the mess department I think. My kid loved taco meat, shredded cheese, ziti, blueberries, yogurt tubes, string cheese, green beans, broccoli heads, cooked spinach, apple slices (thin), hamburger pieces, long strips of chicken. Think about anything he can hold easily and gnaw on. The key is to just let him figure it out on his own. Sometimes it's harder for them to manipulate tiny pieces of things so think about increasing the size of pieces if your comfortable with it.

  • Almond butter on whole wheat bread

Spanish rice with black beans and corn mixed in

Nitrate-free turkey hot dogs (I remove the casing, cut into thin circles)

    Mini cornbread muffins

    Zucchini muffins

    Cantaloup and honey dew melon

    Gluten-free/Whole wheat Annie's mac 'n cheese

Turkey meatballs w/ and w/out sauce

Colby Jack cheese (block cut into thin strips or small cubes)

French toast made with whole wheat bread and more egg than half-n-half

Grapes (halved and skin removed, if he prefers)

    Meatloaf

    Roasted, shredded chicken

For what it's worth, my 14 month old doesn't use his front 8 teeth to chew anything, it's all about mashing with those gums! ;)

  • We did BLW with DD2, so she only has 2-3 teeth when we started at 6 months. She pretty much did fine with any soft food we gave her. One of her first foods was broccoli. We also did lots of sweet potato fries, pretty much any cooked veggie, toast, soft fruits, refried beans on a tortilla, fish... I just stayed away from sharp, hard foods, and anything really chewy.
