Breastfeeding

When did your supply "level out?"

Everyone keeps telling me to wait until my supply "levels out" to buy nursing bras. When does/did this happen for you?

I'm EPing, and right now, I'm producing about 2-3oz per breast and my son is a week old. I'm pumping every 2-3 hours. I feel like I'm overproducing!

  • Give it until your baby is 2-3 weeks old.

That is a lot of milk! Right now, you're hormonally driven. It will naturally fall off a bit around 6 weeks and again around 3-4 months. Freeze some ahead, and perhaps cut yourself some slack and go 3-4 hours overnight.

  • Like PP said I would take advantage of the supply and freeze what you can.  I EP'd for 11 months and found it was hard to maintain a good supply towards the end when I just wanted to throw the pump off a bridge.

  • Go ahead and buy a cheap nursing bra if you need one now. You can get more later if you need to. I did go down a lot both in the bust and band measurements as the baby weight came off. However, once I got the hang of things I went back to my normal bras. I'm a DD so I needed the extra support and it wasn't that much harder to nurse in my normal bras.

  • For me both times it was around 2 or 3 months. I did endup liking the cheap bras from target the best anyway so I have them in three sizes for different times during nursing.
