Re: probably the millionth castor oil question...

  • I took it when I was 10 days overdue with DS at my Dr.'s suggestion.  It tastes like vegetable oil.  It's gross but I was able to get it down.  I went into labor 4 hours after drinking it.  I can't remember where it is in the store though, just ask someone there maybe.

  • any pharmacy should carry it. I did it a few days ago and all I got was a very raw bottom! Good Luck. It doesn't taste that terrible just so thick it's hard to swallow.

  • Actually I dont think it's talked about all that much.  My MW recommended it for me and my response was No Way!  I thought I would get really sick.  But about a week ago I changed my mind and went ahead and tried it.

It did not work for me.  I took 2 tbls. in sprite.  The thing is, it doesn't mix well.  Because its oil.  So you have to shake it up and drink it really fast and it will get all over your lips.  It's messy, you'll gag, and it kind of tastes/feels like your drinking petroleum jelly.

Get it in the pharmacy section of your local grocery store by the laxatives.  Its a small, like 6 oz bottle or something like that.  Pretty cheap.  You're going to want something to drink it with, or chase it with.

It affects people differently.  I had diarhea, but nothing extreme.  Baby was moving around like crazy and honestly that kind of scared me.  After the fact, my midwife even said that it "stirs the baby up".  I don't think I would have tried it if I knew that because it felt like he was upset. And thats why castor oil is really controversial, because it sends the baby into distress, along with making you sick to your stomach.

It works for a lot of people though, something like 60%.  I've actually heard of more people going into labor within 10 hrs after drinking it more so than those of us who did not go into labor.  So good luck!  I wouldn't try it though, unless you were trying to avoid getting medically induced and it was your last option.

One last thing.. stay hydrated.  Water + Gatorade, lots of it.

wow this was super informative, thanks!! I think that I will try it because I am a little nervous of being medically induced... but I will not stray far from home with our bathroom after reading more about it!

  • I'm going to the grocery store today...maybe I will get some and try it FWIW.  I had NEVER considered doing it, but at this point, I think I'm willing to try anything.
