Adoption

Intro, and question!

Hello!!!

I have just been lurking for a while but I figured I would introduce myself. I am (as of today) 25 years old and have a very sweet son and a baby on the way! Today, however marks the date that from the reading I've done allows us to begin the adoption process... And honestly I couldn't be more thrilled! My husband and I have talked about adoption since we started dating (10 years ago) and I have always known I wanted to adopt. We are mostly interested in international adoption.

Now here's my question. Though I've done extensive research I have always found that referrals are better. So, do you ladies have a ny recommendations on companies to start the process with? Also, did you do fundraisers or comeuppance with the money yourselves?and how???

Thanks!!!

Re: Intro, and question!

  • Welcome to the board! Since you're reasonably young for starting this process, you may run into some issues with international adoption. Many countries have requirements for age and length of marriage... Just FYI.

You certainly have a bit of time until you'll be ready to bring another little one home anyway since you have one on the way right now! Congrats, by the way! :)

We are doing some fundraising for our adoption; you can read about that on my blog (link in siggy) if you want. We've raised only about $2,500 so far of the $15,000 we need, so we have a long way to go!

    Once again, welcome!

  • Hey there! Do y'all have a country in mind? DH and I are under 30 (a lot changes if your H is over 30), so we know that there are age limits for a number of countries.

    There are so many agencies;

     https://adoption.state.gov/hague_convention/agency_accreditation/agency_search.php

above is a link to all the ones that are approved by the Hague convention. Uganda (our country) isn't a Hague country, but our agency is, and I'm glad for that.

Also looking through agency programs will help you get a feel for "what's out there." doing a country search on adoption.state.gov is helpful, but not always as practically informative as perusing 20 different agencies' programs.

    Come home, baby A!
  • I have no answers to your question, just wanted to say hi and welcome!
  • Thanks Ladies! We have some countries in mind. For the ones we've looked at( Kenya and Colombia) we meet the marriage requirement and with me being 25 we meet the age one as well. I know we might have to wait some since I'm pregnant again but that's fine. I just want to start doing actual research now and possibly start all the paperwork and home study part of the process so that when we are able to be matched we can be a step closer to bringing our children home!

I'm really excited to start this journey and look forward to hearing about yours!!:)

  • Welcome! I don't have any advice as far as specific agencies, but look at ones that offer information sessions. DH and I are just in the "getting the ball rolling" phase and most of the agencies nearby have sessions that you can attend to learn more about their process and meet some staff members.
