Baby name dilemma - WDYT? (long)

H and I have been back and forth about a baby name for this little girl  There is a name that I have fallen in love with and that he is really liking too, but I just don't know if it's a terrible idea or not.  I'm afraid to tell anyone IRL b/c I'm sure that they will hate it, but I guess ultimately I don't care, I just rather not know.

DS's name is Thorsten Gage, so you can tell we don't like common names.  One of my requirements is that the first name is not on the SS website's top 1,000 (not an easy thing to accomplish...).  So the name we like?  Zyla (sounds like Lilah with a Z).  We're also thinking about Kadence as a middle name (not sure on the spelling of that though). Our last name starts with an H and is one syllable. So Zyla Kadence H.  Horrible?  Or OK?

Although I don't think I would let responses here sway me away form choosing this name if we want, I wold like to know what kind of lashing/comments we might be in for ;)  I'd love to hear your thoughts ladies! TIA!

PS - I'm not posting this on the Baby Names board or my new BMB b/c I feel a lot more comfortable with this type of things here at 'home' :D

  • Love the middle name.  The 1st name is interesting and will make some people go hmmmm.  If you and your DH love it go for it.

  • I love Zyla. Personally, I'd spell the middle name with a C but I do think that the names sound good together regardless.
  • I love the name good choice.

  • I think its a really pretty name. Different but not crazy.

  • Hmm, good thought on not posting on Baby Names because you will never, ever win over there no matter what your name is!

At first I wasn't sure, but I actually thing I really like the way Zyla looks.  Obviously she'll always get questions about her name, but that's not a bad thing at all.  My DH has a fairly unusual name but more so because his parents spelled it with a K and not a C.  TBH, if he could change it easily he would have because it takes so much explanation.  So, from that, I think I would also consider the C for Kadence if you choose that as a mn.

All in all though, we really loved a more unusual name if C had been a girl.  For years, much as we tried, we just never found anything we liked more and always came back to it.  If this is how you guys feel about Zyla then you should just go for it!

  • I like Zyla.  It's different, but straight forward.  You look at it, and instantly know how to pronounce it, and could easily spell it for yourself too.  I have a friend with a daughter named Zanna.  Same thing.

I was trying to think of what your last name might be, (Ho? Hah?).  Obvs noone will call her by her middle name, so I was thinking that Zyla Ho or Zyla Ha might sound like xylophone or something.  But that's for you to decide.

Not sure if it matters but Cadence/Kadence might be on the top 1,000.  I think it's pretty common-ish these days.

I agree with this. It's different but not too out there. If you both like it, then go for it.

  • I like it too.  I would go with what you and your H like and if you don't want to hear your IRL people's opinions I'd just tell them you guys are debating options until LO is born. (that's what we did this time around). I personally think most people will accept and like the uniqueness of her name when they hear it after she is born, beforehand though people seem to think they can throw their 2cents in and give their options for consideration as well.

  • I am more of a traditional name person, so while I wouldn't choose the names for my DD, I do like the way they sound together...everything flows really nicely.

  • I love it! I have a different name too keagan and love that it sticks in peoples heads.
  • Thanks for all the input! I would def consider the common spelling for the middle name, I just didn't really look into that part yet (I knew one person named Kadence, with a K). I do think though that middle names are given strictly for dramatic effect when a child is in trouble ;) I'm glad so many of you like the name!

  • I actually really like the name Zyla Kadence.  I don't think Zyla is too far out there at all.

  • NMS at all, but I don't hate it.  Like others have said it is different but when I see Zyla I know how to say it, which gains big points in my book.  Personally I hate Kadence (no matter how it is spelled) because it seems really trendy right now.

  • As a fellow uncommon name lover, I think you have to just love the name and go with your gut if it feels right to you. Sure some people will have opinions ... but honestly, they'd have opinions no matter what name you chose, so you can't let it bother you.

I like the sound and look of Zyla a lot. The only downside I can see is that Isla and Lila are both somewhat popular right now, so some people might confuse your daughter's name with one of those, so you'll probably have to spell it for them. But again, for me that's not a deal-breaker. I have a fairly common first name that was very trendy among the baby boomers, and I still have to spell it for people every single time I give it  because there is more than one common spelling.

I like Cadence with a C, better than Kadence but both are fairly popular, so I think you could go either way.

If you're really worried about going with a very uncommon first, you could consider using a very traditional name for the middle, giving LO more options. That's what we did... if DS ever goes through a conservative phase and doesn't like his unique first name any more, he can go by "Frank" which is cool in a very old school, straightlaced kind of way. :)

    GL with your decision!

  • Although I tend to like more traditional names, I like Zyla in that it is pronounced the way it is spelled and I like Z names :)  I don't like You-neek spellings of things, haha.

And since you have a son with a less common name, I think Zyla goes well with it. I second spelling Kadence with a "C" since that is the "correct" spelling, but you could really go either way!

  • LO's name is Myla (like Lilah with a M) so of course I think Zyla is a really pretty name. Myla is a bit more common I think it currently ranks around 400 of top 1000. I like that Zyla is a bit different but it sounds like it is spelled. You don't have random excess letters or ' in the middle of the name (sorry that drives me nuts!!)

  • I do have to say I'm not a huge fan- I just keep thinking Xylophone and that all the kids in school will call her that!!! I don't think it's TOO crazy though. Why not Lyla? Or is that too common?

All in all, I think the names have a nice flow. As someone with a horrible sounding German last name here, we have gone with more common first names!!

    GL deciding! Names are hard!!!
