Recommend a sling for grocery shopping

I've now got 3u3 and groceries will be impossible without my newborn in a sling, now.  DH works long hours and we live too far from town to wait until he gets home at night to go.  SO - what kind is best for something like grocery shopping?  I want something that's easy to put on in the parking lot but that will hold him up higher on my body.  The ones that hold him down at my belly hurt my back like I'm pregnant again.  I was thinking some kind of a ring sling?  I don't know anything about those though.  I have a Moby & an Ergo but both of those seem like they'd be somewhat cumbersome to put on in the parking lot.  Thanks for your suggestions!

Re: Recommend a sling for grocery shopping

  • No carrier should ever hold a newborn down by your belly ;)  You always want baby "close enough to kiss" - both to prevent the back pain and to make sure your newborn is held snug enough by the carrier to prevent slumping and maintain a good airway.

Either the moby or the ergo should work - the ergo is pretty simple to put on as there's nothing to drag - a bit of practice should make it easier.  If you pre-tie the moby before you go you just have to pop baby in once you are there.

Ring slings are great too and nice for quick carries.  I have lots of info on choosing and using carriers in my siggy link ;)

  • I love the Moby for shopping! Agree with pp's that it's easiest to tie at home and just slip baby in once you get there.

3U3 -- grocery shopping will be a trip! I required a sling with just the one. It made it much easier -- baby often napped and my cart wasn't full of bucket seat. I love my Obimama ring sling. It's may favorite of my carriers. I also have a k'tan and a mei-tai. I don't recommend the k'tan. It's quick to put her in and out. We still use it for most errands and she 7 months, 19 lbs and 24 inches long.

YES!  I'm afraid we'll never eat again.  Thankfully, our store just got the baskets with the two kid seats up front so I can wear the baby and put the two toddlers in the seats and still have my basket for groceries.  The first time should be nothing short of sobbing in the parking lot when we leave.  Ha!

  • The ergo should be really quick to put the baby in. I use that because it's the most supportive and the fastest to put on. I'm surprised you think it takes a while.
