Is the lightweight travel system really lightweight?

Ok so we registered for a Graco SnugRide 30, a frame stroller to use right away and a Gracco lightrider stroller to use once he?s older.

However MIL is pushing for us to get a Gracco lightweight travel system. We said no at first because we have heard too many people say they are no good in the long run as they are big and bulky.

well after looking some more it seems as if our lightrider stroller is very similar almost exact to the stroller that comes in the light travel system.

However the car seat is a 22 not a 30 I am not sure how much that will say us. So opinions needed. 22 or 30 and is a lightweight travel system really lightweight as in comparable to their lightrider stroller?

TIA

  • I dont have a comment in regards to the weight of the travel system but I was going to suggest that by the time your baby hits 20 lbs or so you will likely be sick of carrying them around in the carseat.  At least that's where we stopped and ours would have worked up until 30lbs.  I know that some people leave the infant seat in the car once they are done carrying their babe around in the infant seat, but we just moved up to a convertible once we stopped carrying around the infant seat.

Also, have you looked at all the other stroller options out there?  There really are so many better options than a travel system which so many people just automatically default to.

  • I think Graco anything feels like crap and wouldn't be good in the long run. The quality is just not there and they're a pain to push around. We got the Britax "travel system" (a B-Safe and B-Agile). They're much higher quality than the Graco, etc, but work like a travel system. Plus the stroller is actually light and folds up nice and small very easily.

My best advice? Go to a store near you and test drive them. We were all set to buy a Graco til we "drove" it. Try steering one-handed, walk quickly and slowly, nagivate around obstacles, etc. Make sure it works for you.

This exactly. We have the Chicco Keyfit 22 and have about 1 pound left until we hit the limit but carrying that little chubby around plus the weight of the carseat SUCKS. 30 pounds isn't light after a few steps! I'm a tall girl and lift weights regularly and it's still really awkward to carry him in it-- those seats aren't exactly made with ergonomics in mind for the person carrying it! There's no way I'd be using it up to 30 pounds. My son is tall for his age, too (28+ inches at 5 months) and he hangs out of it anyway so we're better off going to the convertible seat for that reason, too.

  • Ditto the pps, keep looking. The Graco Snugride seats are all fine, but their strollers are lacking. The Literider was the very first stroller I owned, it lasted only a few months. Not much has changed in 15 years, lots of people I know have had similar experiences and Graco customer service is not helpful. I'd be looking at other strollers in the same range as buying the Literider and the snap n go, you won't regret it. Lots of strollers fit the Snugrides, shouldn't be hard to find a great stroller.

To answer your original question, even "lightweight" travel systems aren't so light once the car seat is on top. It's one of the reasons I ditch the infant seat entirely and just use the stroller. Or find something with decent wheels that is easy to push.
