If you have a girl with curly hair, advice needed

What do you use on your LO's hair and how do you style it?  DD's hair is mullet like and I should mention DD has not had a haircut yet.  Her hair is wavy and super short in the front and long in the back (the back can be ringlets if I twirl them around my finger).  If I pull her curls it goes half way down her back, otherwise it is just below her shoulders.  Right now I brush her hair with a wet brush but then it ends up looking like I don't even brush it.  I've tried pony tails but she won't leave them in for more than 1 hour and most of her hair falls out of the rubberbands because of the random super short parts.  Just curious what other moms do if their LO has curly hair.  By the way, this is coming from someone who has poker straight hair.

  • I have curly hair, and DD has straight hair. I am Growing her bangs out, so the lengths are kind of similar. I usually put it in sections with a rubber band. Like, pull the bangs area back and rubber band, the take first section and a little more and rubber band, then a pony tail. Sometimes, I divide in half and do the same sections, but piggy tails. You could also do a high bun. Would she wear a headband? Barrettes?

  • Also, since it's curly, I would leave a little conditioner in, or use some product.

  • I make sure to use conditioner on DD's hair. After I brush it I scrunch it to maximize the curls. I let DD play with my phone while I put in ponytails or braids, lol. She's so distracted then she doesn't even care what I'm doing. She wears a lot of clips too. Have you tried using some kid-friendly gel to smooth down the parts that stick out of the ponytails? Or maybe use some aloe like you would gel?

  • I have thick frizzy, hair, and DD does too, although hers is much more curly than mine (thanks to DH).  We use special shampoo - J&J makes a special shampoo with extra conditioner (it's in the blue bottle) and we use some sort of detangler after she's out of the shower (either suave or J&J).  I've also told DD that if she won't let me brush her hair or put it up then we're going to have to cut it.  Lately she's into braids, and that seems to be big hit - we play rapunzel and I brush it, sing the song from the movie, and then braid it.  if I put a ponytail up top and on the bottom it usually stays in pretty well.

It sounds like she also might need a haircut, just to get rid of the dead ends - and it will make it lay better.

  • I use a little argon oil or frizz ease in DS1's hair.  I also use conditioner.  Obviously I don't do his hair like the girls, but it helps with the tangles and frizz since we keep it on the long side for a boy.

  • Hmm...maybe I should be taking some of this advice instead of responding...My DD has pretty curly hair and I usually just leave it be...Sometimes it looks fantastic, but oftentimes it is pretty wild and crazy.  I really try not to stress about it...We use conditioner when we wash it and I brush it once a day.  No matter how great it looks when we leave the house, carseat-head is never pretty.
  • I have curly hair and my older DD's is more wavy than curly but gets tangled like nothing I have ever seen.  I try to get it cut every 2 or so months (although its been a bit longer over the summer but going next week!).  We use conditioner that is not part of a 2 in 1 shampoo/cond combo as it works way better and we use a detangle spray (I think it Sauve).  Yes, 2 mins after brushing you can't always tell that it was brushed but it was.  She never liked her hair up at a young age but now loves to put things in and it looks great.  She is growing her hair (she is 6 now) and it is just past her shoulders and all 1 length but with some long layers to help keep things under control - very similar to my hair right now actually.
