Another post to help liven up the board...
I work at a preschool/daycare and the public libraian came in to read to the kids this week. She was telling us about another DC she goes to. She said they have a bunch of pets at the DC, a cat, snakes, and more. She told us the cat knocked the lid off the snake tank and they can't find their 2 snakes.
I thought this was all kinds of wrong. First my child wouldn't go to a public DC center that has a cat. I am allergic and would be afraid of DD having some sort of reaction. Second I think DC pets should be limited to caged animals that the kids can help take care of, and I would not want my child to have to feed a snake a live mouse. And third Snakes roaming the center?? Gross!!
I guess there is a mother who is so afraid she makes them bring her child outside to her and will not come into the building. Ummm at that point don't you think it's time to pull your child??
Your thoughts????
Re: Missing snakes at DC??

We are pet friendly and while I do not like snakes, I don't think I would mind if my child's daycare had snakes or a cat just because I think pets are cool for children. Now, I would not want her touching the snake or a snake running loose in her daycare and would definitely pull her out!
There was actually some recent research saying that children under the age of one who are exposed to pets get sick 30% less than children who are not because of the immunities they get. It mentioned them having LESS allergies too. I think they meant the furry pets though.

They are corn snakes from what I heard. I was saying if I couldn't even walk into the center myself I would pull my child, it wasn't in fear of the dangers of the snake. But if I had a phobia so bad I could not take my child into their daycare and come pick them up inside I would have to leave the center. My child and I both need to feel safe within their center.
I am deathly afraid of snakes, but I don't want to instill that on my child, so I'd have to suck it up. Get in there and get out. However, I would be too afraid though to send a kid to DC if there are snakes missing. I know that there is no reason to be afraid of contained/nutured snakes, but I still am. We all have irrational fears and snakes are my #1 (earthquakes #2).
We have cats so that wouldn't bother me, but if either DH or I were allergic I wouldn't send Ty there because he'd have cat hair all over him, thus in the house.
I have to agree that any sort of class pet needs to be contained and something that the kids are helping with. LIke in Kindergarten when we had chicks at Easter time. Actually, I think at Ty's DC the big kids had baby chicks and took them over to the "baby house". Apparently Ty LOOOOVED them and tried kissing them all/eating them is more likely!
i would love it if my daycare had pets.
i would worry much more about the abuse the pets would suffer than what the pets might do to the kids. i would think a kid could really hurt a small snake.
I opened this really hoping you had misspelled snacks, like maybe your DC was giving your LOs snacks to other kids or something.
I would not send LO to a DC if they had snakes. Maybe if she was like 4 or so and it was part of Preschool but not at this age. Also I have bad cat allergies and cannot be around them so sending her to a DC with one would be a problem. I also wouldn't ever 100% trust a cat unless it was d-clawed and I feel that is terrible thing to do to a cat so I wouldn't end her somewhere that they did that to a cat.
Awww, poor snakes.
Corn snakes are pretty lithe as far as constrictors go, so they're probably loooonnnnngg gone. I am a little confused as to why they were in a tank with a lid the cat could knock off, ESPECIALLY in a daycare.
I have a pet snake, and her tank has a custom-made lid with a hinged top that is impossible to knock off, or accidentally open. Even if the latches aren't closed, the lid is put together in a way that it takes a relatively large amount of force in the correct place to open it. Monty hasn't escaped in almost 12 years, which is about when we had the custom lid made.
Even with supervision, the kids don't get to play with Monty yet. They LOVE watching her move around her tank, though. D spent a good 15 minutes going "whooaaaaa. Whoaaa. Whoooaoaaaaaaa" the other morning while she was out and about within the tank.
