Adoption

How do you deal with insurance?

For those of you who have adopted already, how did you get coverage for your LO?  My attorney said that legally BCBS is required to cover our baby as soon as the BPs sign over the rights.  However, I guess I have to add them to my policy first, which could be difficult since I won't necessarily know when they are arriving.  And to add another level of complexity, we are currently on my insurance but when our baby arrives and I become a SAHM, we will be switching to DH's insurance.  Ugh too many little things to think about!

I sent a note to my HR rep, but she's currently out of the office.

Re: How do you deal with insurance?

  • That's a great question. I have kind of been wondering about how all of that works too.

Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! OK, haven't been through this yet, but from what I have read you will be able to add your child to your insurance when they are born.  I would have your husband add it to his insurance since that is the insurance you will switch too.  Once you have a BM identified and know the due date, I would call your insurance company a few weeks before to give them the heads up.  I know for our HS we had to have our insurance company provide a letter that they will accept an adopted child.

So up until you submit the paperwork to add LO to the plan, do you pay out of pocket and then insurance reimburses you? Or do they treat it as if the baby is already on the policy?

  • We're on DH's insurance. DD was an emergency placement: she was already born when we got The Call. He called his HR rep, and between them and BCBS, they said they'd put DD on insurance ASAP. We had paperwork from the agency stating that we were responsible for all her medical stuff, so he kept a copy of that in case anyone had an issue. I think we might have even faxed it to them. There were no problems. DD had to be seen within 48 hours of hospital release, and it went very smoothly.

ETA: When you quit, that's a life-changing event so your DH should be able to add you and your LO to his insurance without waiting for open enrollment. IMO he should talk to HR about your plans so they know what's coming.

  • I don't know if this is state by state.... but we (in CA) have 30 days to add a dependent.  Your provider will take your insurance card and bill w/the assumption that you'll follow through and add your child.

It was super simple.  Never questioned.

This is what I've been told will happen. But if you're switching to his insurance anyway, why not just do this with dh'a insurance and only add you later?
