someone explain this to me

so, a FB friend, a woman that teaches group fitness. (Which is how I know her.) She has two little girls, they're 3.5 years apart, I think they're 1 and 4 now. Anyhow, her status is:

"If you REALLY love your kids, do NOT feed them dairy"

I'm confused, my kids love cheese. I know it has hormones, but so does soy. She hasn't put her reasoning behind it up yet. Maybe I'm outta the loop, but cheese has many things in it that are good for you. If she clues me in I'll reply to this post.

Re: someone explain this to me

  • If you really love your kids....maybe don't let them go to her house. ;)

Eh, people have all sorts of ideas they stand behind.  I have a very, very crunchy friend who lives in horror of the fact that I don't feed my child raw organic milk.  To each their own.

  • I must not love my kids then because we are a very cheesy family:)
  • If my kid didnt eat cheese or yogurt he would barely eat.  Cheese is his favorite.
  • Damn! And there I was, thinking I love my kids and all. Guess not.

  • uh, yeah...all Jack eats is cheese. I'm pretty sure if I took cheese and butter out of his diet he would weigh like 8 lbs.

She said it has to do with the casein.

We're still going to eat cheese, and probably lots of it. haha

She said it has to do with the casein.

So I just asked Dr Google what his thoughts on casein were, and here's what I found (from https://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-casein.htm)

Many people who are either allergic to casein and have linked it to milk, or who are vegan and therefore avoid animal products altogether, are not aware of the prevalence of casein in foods. For these people, it is important to note that, although a product may be labeled Lactose Free, it may easily still contain casein for other reasons. Soy cheeses, for example, often contain casein derived from milk, which may stimulate allergic reactions in people who assume that they are dairy free.

I bet your friend eats soy cheese ;)

    The same article went on

Casein has also been linked to negative effects in people with autism. While in most people, casein is easily broken down by the digestive system into peptides known as casomorphins, and then further processed into basic amino acids, some evidence suggests that in autistics, this process does not occur fully. The resulting casomorphins, which fail to break down completely, may have an effect on the body similar to that of morphine or other opiates. For this reason, some experts on autism recommend that people suffering from autism avoid casein in their diets.

But I guess what your friend is referring to is the possible link between casein and cancer (https://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-the-connection-between-casein-and-cancer.htm)

In the scientific and nutritional communities, there are reasons to suggest that casein, a milk protein, is linked to cancer development in some animals and humans. Some studies have shown that casein and cancer are linked in rats, yet it is unclear if these findings hold true in the human population.

    (...)

Many critics to casein and cancer studies point out that rats are often fed a diet consisting of powdered isolated casein in casein studies, which doesn't occur naturally in human or animal diets.

  • She said basically what you found on google. so, there's really no evidence that casein is going to give us all cancer. If you base your life on EVERYTHING that CAN give you cancer then I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be living at all.

She says she only eats non GMO soy. :/

Hm, I wonder if she eats soy cheese. I know they are vegans. My kids love cheese, and I feed them things like ketchup - which has sugar!!!! BAH! I must not love them at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If she's a vegan, she's probably either not eating soy cheese or eating a brand called Daiyo -- it's strictly vegan.  As a vegan, I'd hope she knows that anything containing casein is not vegan.

Casein is arguable one of the most addictive substances... which is why you'll hear MOST people say they LOVE cheese.  I think it's kinda funny.

As I've said, I don't care how you feed your kids as long as you don't care how I feed mine.  I won't ever post crap like that on FB either.  It's not my job to open dialogues about food by condemning others for their choices.

If someone has a question, I'm more than happy to answer, but her approach rubs EVERYONE the wrong way.

And THAT is one of the many reasons why I like you so much. Because I know I can ask you questions about things and you won't get up and try to just convince me that your way is the only way. <3 And now I know more about casein :)

    Amen Sistah!

And according to this lady I must hate my kid!  But my Dr. says she is happy and healthy so why would I change what I am feeding her.  If I have to due to medical reasons then I will but momma and baby love their steak!

P.S. I am glad that I have friends that live and eat differently from me so I can ask questions when they come up. :)

  • I'm very meh about cheese. But Alex loves it. And ketchup. If it has cheese or ketchup, he will eat it.

What you do is your decision, and what I do is my decision. I never understand forcing your beliefs on others.
