Question about Braxton Hicks...

This is a "I should know this" question, but find myself wondering the answer as I've been having more and more of them this pregnancy (or so it seems).

I know they are "practice" contractions, but do they do anything physically to get you ready for labor?

I noticed 3 on my 30 minute drive home from work on a day that I was particularly well-hydrated and not stressed and on my feet all day. They weren't painful (though occasionally I do have one that causes a pinching sensation super low, seemingly near my cervix).

Anyways, as my time gets closer and closer, I wonder if these are doing my body any good to get ready for labor.

Re: Question about Braxton Hicks...

  • They don't cause your cervix to dilate but they are practice for your uterus, which IMO is helpful.

  • Since your uterus is a muscle as it stretches it does these contractions to to keep tone.

  • From what my OB tells me, the only contractions that cause any cervical progress are the ones that you can feel above your belly button. That has really helped me distinguish, especially when I am awakened by them and groggy!
