Every since my DD was born we've had a pretty simple bedtime routine. I nurse her, then leave her in the bed with a bedrail on each side. Then there's a couple hours after she's gone to bed that I'm still up. Usually she doesn't wake up within those couple of hours but sometimes she does. Lately when I go up she has rolled on to her belly and has rotated so that she's facing the foot of the bed.
So my question is: when she starts to crawl (which will probably be soon), what's stopping her from crawling right off the end of the bed? We don't have a footboard and the bed rails don't even go all the way down to that end anyways.

Depends on the kid. DD simply never tried to crawl off. She always woke up pissed off and wanted someone to attend to her NOW, and she let you know.
DS woke up more calmly and would go exploring. Even with a monitor, there wasn't enough noise to know he was awake. We ended up putting the mattress on the floor so he could just come out to us.
My son is the exact same way. He would wake up, especially at nap time, and decide to crawl around without making a peep, and he fell off the bed once and it was awful (for us not him because the guilt lasted a lot longer than his tears). We moved the mattress to the floor and taught him how to dismount safely. This has proved useful in helping him easily learn to get down stairs, off the couch, etc. safely too.
I can think of a few options: your mattress on the floor, LOs mattress on the floor in your or LO's room, start using crib - and you can always bring into bed after the first waking. It just depends on whether you want to continue bedsharing full time. Some people put pillows/blankets around the bed so if LO falls its onto something soft. But that seemed a bigger PITA to me than just getting rid of the box spring temporarily.
