Still feeling crappy and question

I posted earlier that I think I have food poisoning. I wasn't too concerned earlier because I was at least keeping down the little I ate. Now between the vomiting and diarrhea I can't even keep down water. I think I read youre supposed to call the dr if you can't hold anything down for 24 hours. Anybody have experience with this? If I went to the ER what would they do?

Re: Still feeling crappy and question

  • I had one more question. Do babies somehow get what they need even if I haven't been able to hold anything down? Or is this hurting their growth? I'm still feeling lots of fetal movement but I'm worried about not getting nutrition to them.

  • Your babies will pull off of your energy stores to get what they need. Our bodies are miraculous in this way.  They will provide for and nourish our babies first and foremost.  However, if you have been able to keep nothing down for a significant period of time you probably need to call your doctor or go to the ER.  Dehydration WILL cause you to start having contractions.  That's how my PTL issues all started around 28ish weeks.

    Hope you feel better.

  • I would definitely call the on call OB and I'm sure they'll tell you to go to the hospital. You need fluids if nothing else. You don't want to be dehydrated. I hope you feel better!

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
  • Last week (at 33 wks) I had a 24 hour bug that was miserable. I was up all night with vomiting and diarrhea. I wasn't keep anything down in the morning and most of the day. I called my OB in the morning when they opened and kept in touch with them throughout the day. They didn't want me to go in unless I felt dizzy or cramping. They said the most important thing was to keep fluids in. The recommended fluids were gatorade, ginger ale and apple juice (although the apple juice can make it worse so be careful if it has the opposite effect on you). I also found once I was able to keep some fluids in that eating a few saltines was helpful to me.

I would definitely call your OB because it won't hurt and they may want you to go in for fluids.

  • I agree with pp's suggestions of calling your OB. You very well may need fluids and possibly IV meds for nausea.

The babies will get what they need from your body stores. If it makes you feel better, when I was hospitalized for HG, I was allowed nothing by mouth for several days in order to heal my esophagus. My girls did just fine and continued to grow (as seen on u/s to reassure me). Even while loosing significant amount ofs weight, they thrived.

Dehydration is serious though as it can cause PTL, so call now. Hopefully they can have you feeling better soon. Take it easy!
