Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Feeding "schedule" for an 11-month-old

LO will be 11 mo in 3 days.  She eats table food pretty well, and we usually do 3 meals of solids per day with one afternoon snack when she wakes up.  This week I have started to offer solids before the bottle, but I'm concerned that she's not eating enough food to eventually phase out the bottle around 12-13 mo.  Am I rushing this?  Also, she does not like the sippy; I've tried the Nuk bottle sippy, the straw kind, and the kind with the spout.  She doesn't understand any of them.  I have a few questions:

1.  What kind of sippy does LO like?  Do you only put water in it or formula for meals?

2.  How much formula/BM is your 11 mo taking along with solids, and when are the bottle feedings?

3.  Ideas for snacks for this age?

  • We use the Avent sippys and I put water in it in between meals and formula for during meals. She gets about 3oz of formula with each meal. I will actually let her have as much as she wants but she usually only takes the 3-4ozs. We only do 2 bottle feedings....once in the morning when she first wakes and one at night before bed.

  • 1. We have a bunch of different sippys. I can't say which is his favorite. I have a couple that I use for formula, and others that I use only for water. Right now, he gets formula in bottles morning and night, and in a sippy in the afternoon. I'm going to switch the morning bottle to a sippy soon.

    2. Between 9 months and now (11.5m), I reduced the formula from 24oz to 21oz. He gets three bottles - morning, after his nap (2pm-ish), and bedtime. I'm still struggling with giving him enough solids.

    3. Favorite snacks - watermelon, cheerios, cheese (shredded or slices), banana, kiwi, and I just added blueberries to the rotation. He also loves graham crackers and goldfish, but he usually only gets those if I'm at playgroup and one of the other kids is in a sharing mood.

  • My DD is 11 months old today.  She has 3 meals a day and a few snacks in between.  I want her to be all done with bottles and formula by 12 months.  We'll see. . .

    1.  I think her favorite of the sippy cups we have is a Playtex straw cup.  It's the kind that you can squeeze the bottom to "help" LO learn how to use the straw.  She got it pretty quick and now prefers that cup.  She also has a soft spout and hard spout cup, and we use the hard spout one a fair amount too.  Sippys are just for water and juice right now, but we're starting cow milk this weekend.  She will not drink formula from a sippy, for some reason.  She pushes it away and yells "bah-woo," which I've determined is her word for bottle.  Yeah, so good luck to me in getting rid of bottles in a month, I guess.

    2.  2 bottles/day: 6 oz in the morning when she wakes up and 8 oz before bed at night, so a total of 14 oz/day.  She doesn't always finish at bedtime, though.  We're changing that bedtime bottle around this week, too.  Right now, her bottle is literally RIGHT before bed, and I want to make it earlier so that we can brush her teeth after.  We do water or juice with meals, but like I said, this weekend we're going to start cow milk with meals.

    3.  FRUIT!  She will pig out on pretty much any fruit we give her.  She loves watermelon, cantaloupe and mango the best, I think, but I've never seen her dislike any fruit we've given her.  Also rice cakes, puffs, cheerios, cheeze-its were a big hit the other day.

  • 1.  I still can't really get LO to drink from a sippy.  I offer the NUK "training sippy" at mealtime with water, and she just sort of bites on it-doesn't get much out of it, and doesn't seem to want to.

    2.  She has 3 meals a day, and 4 bottles per day.  She has 7 oz of formula when she wakes, then breakfast (usually oatmeal and fruit, with a mini pancake or two or a half a piece of toast with a little jam), another 7-8 oz of formula at about 1pm, then lunch (lunch meat/cheese, or leftovers from supper, or a quesadilla, and veggies), then another 7-8 oz of formula at about 4:30pm, then dinner (whatever we're having), and a bedtime bottle of 7 oz formula.  Usually a total of about 28 oz of formula per day.

    3.  She doesn't seem to want a whole lot of snacks, probably bc she is still drinking so much formula, but I normally give puffs, goldfish, yogurt melts or cheerios.  I would like to start incorporating more healthy snacks, though, maybe fruit or cheese.

  • My LO will be 11 months in about 2 weeks...

1 - We love the Zo-li Bot sippy cup with straw.  It's great because the straw is flexible and weighted at the bottom so no matter which way he tips it, he can get water out.  So far we only put water in it, which he loves.

2 - He BFs when he wakes up, has about 3oz in a bottle after first nap, BFs before second nap, before bed and about 2x overnight (more for comfort than hunger).  He eats 3 solid meals and 1-2 snacks.  His meals are still pretty small and I can't imagine him eating enough to wean from bottle/breast by 12 months.

3 - Cut up fruit, puffs, whatever I am eating...we are just getting into snacks with him.
