Multiples

Flying alone at 16 weeks?

I have a really amazing opp for my job which requires me flying a 4 hour flight to Miami alone and then staying there 2 nights.

The nurse I called at my OB said it's fine but my husband is dead set against it. He doesn't want me flying with "the babies" and is really uncomfortable about it.

Has anyone flown while pregnsnt with multiples? Any big deal?

Re: Flying alone at 16 weeks?

  • I flew at 14 weeks with DH and DS.  I think I would have had an easier time if i'd been by myself!  I'd just make sure you have a roller suitcase and that you're not carrying a heavy carry-on.  Also be sure to get up every hour or so and walk around a little and drink plenty of water.  You should be fine.

  • I made a 7 hour flight when I was 16 weeks pregnant. I needed a little extra food and water, but it was completely normal otherwise and I had an 18 month old on my lap.

This is my siggy. Love it.

  • I flew at 20 weeks and it was not a big deal at all.  Just make sure to drink lots of water, have snacks, and get up ever so often to stretch your legs and get circulation.

  • I did a 3 hour flight at 19 weeks with my DH and DS (17 months at the time) and like someone else has already said, it probably would have been easier by myself! DS is a handful. Just drink extra water and get up a few times and I think you'll be totally fine assuming you're having an uncomplicated pregnancy.

  • Thanks everyone - he is really reluctant and doesn't want me to go! I don't know how to tell him it will be okay!

  • I flew to Las Vegas (3 hours) at 12 weeks with no problems. I flew to Houston this week with no problem. I needed a little more time to get through the airport, but I was fine. I will make my last flight to Baton Rouge for a shower at 22 weeks. I think this will be a little tougher, but fine. Then I am grounded.

I think his feelings are valid and should be considered, even if it doesn't seem rational. You are his wife and those are his babies so he has reason to worry. If my DH had strong feelings like that I would definitely consider passing on the trip.

Yes, his feelings should be considered. But at the same time, if this is an amazing work opportunity, how supportive is he being? Pregnancy, even with multiples, is not a disabling condition for most women. Yes, you need to be more cognizant of your fluid intake, of getting proper circulation, etc. but really, I'd have gone insane if my H tried to carry me around on some sort of feather pillow (figuratively, of course) for the duration of this pregnancy.

OP, talk to him about his concerns. What is he afraid will happen? Have him address these concerns with your doctor. You calling does little to help him feel better since he knows you are excited about this opportunity.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy your trip!

  • I flew at 14 weeks and was fine. My biggest fear was morning sickness at that time, but fortunately I didn't throw up until I was at the airport after I reached my destination. :(   I didn't have any morning sickness on the return flight home.
