Do you know if a school is required to provide transportation for all children with an IEP?
When I registered my son, the person who processed the paperwork told me that if he had an IEP, he'd definitely qualify for busing, but at the IEP meeting, they said that a child had to have far more extreme needs than my son to qualify. I looked up the law, and it's a bit ambiguous. It says the IEP must address transportation needs, and the district must provide busing if it's required by the IEP, but it doesn't say all children with an IEP qualify. As it is, my son's IEP is silent on the matter, which by my understanding, does not address the issue as required by law.
What has your experience been?
Re: IEP/transportation question for NJ Mothers
In the district in which I used to work, transportation was only mandated by the IEP for those children in self-contained classes. Depending on the child's ability, if the child was in a self-contained class in their home school, sometimes they weren't provided special transportation and were able to go on the "big bus."
It was on an as-needed basis.
I remember having discussions with my colleagues on how the law isn't clear regarding busing. In grad school, I thought it was required, but it appears that it depends on the district.
