Pregnant after IF

XP: Black tie maternity dress

Hey all,

DH and I just RSVPed to a wedding that is in about a month. It's an evening black tie wedding in NYC. Normally, I'd be psyched...but I'm going to be around 26 weeks pregnant by then with twins. My question is, black tie probably means floor-length gown...right? Any suggestions regarding where to shop for an elegant, formal maternity gown?

Thanks!

Re: XP: Black tie maternity dress

  • I had a black tie wedding in NYC and have been to plenty and want to assure you that a lot of women don't show up in floor length dresses. I think as long as the dress is sufficiently dressy enough (fabric, style) you'll be fine. And people will cut you some slack because you're preggers.

You could try Rosie Pope (https://www.rosiepope.com/category/RPCAT24) or if you are close to NYC she has a store in the city. Alternatively, at 26 weeks you might be able to just buy a really pretty maxi dress at somewhere non-maternity like Bloomingdale's or Saks and get it a size or so big and then have it taken in, although tailoring can be really expensive.

  • I agree with PP.  I think you'll be fine with a dressy knee-length instead of full-length,

Your bump is probably going to be bigger since you're carrying twins, but I was able to get by with an Ann Taylor knee-length non-maternity dress (with a stretchy fabric) when I went to my friend's wedding at 26w last month.  I really did not want to spend $ on something that I can only wear once.  I think if you try looking hard enough, you should be able to find some non-maternity dress that's roomy/stretchy enough for you.

Alternatively, I think there are places/websites that rent formal maternity dress.  I've seen it mentioned a few times on TB.

Otherwise, try looking at A Pea in the Pod.  They have some dressy knee-lengths.  I like this one quite a bit. GL!

  • I heard about this website recently and checked it out - it definitely caters to people who don't want to spend money on a dress to wear once! And they rent you 2 of the same dress in different sizes so you don't have to ship back and forth after trying on. (Sorry, can't make it clicky on my Mac)

  • If you do want to buy, check out Isabella Oliver--very nice, well-made maternity clothes.  But expensive.  I'd definitely try out the rental option.

  • Have you looked at the sale dresses at motherhood.com? They have some cute ones less than $50. I don't know if there's a Motherhood Outlet near you, but I got a great looking lace skirt there on clearance for like $20. Perhaps they'll have similar deals on fancy dresses.
