PSA: BUMBO SEAT RECALL

Edit: To summarize, these are being recalled because there are a lot of injuries including skull fractures from kids wiggling out of these after they were placed on high surfaces even though these seats CLEARLY say do not place on high surfaces. Some injuries were obtained from unknown heights, some on the floor as well. They are offering kits to let you install a seatbelt sort of contraption in them to make them safer so your LO cannot wiggle out.

But so you know it is illegal to try to sell these now because they have been recalled.

I hate those chairs! I have said that I have never used one used to be a nanny and worked in the infant room awhile without seeing the hold fall out of it and here is proof. They suck! I had to turn down three offers for a used one this pregnancy and now I have proof they aren't safe.

I am so glad to see this! I feel that children are either put in them when they are too little sit up and hold up their head on their own, or when they are too big and can wiggle out of them. DH and I just had a conversation about them when we watched our friends put their 4 month old in one, on the counter, and laugh as she tried to push herself out.

I can appreciate the idea behind these, I really can but at the same time since I am afforded to be the opportunity to be a stay at home mom like my mother I tend to agree with her that I turned out fine without all these fancy things and babies haven't had them for thousands of years so I don't really need one. I'm not concerned that my daughter will never learn to sit up because I don't have a bumbo. Besides I'd rather be the one helping her learn than using plastic to do it... although plastic would make it easier to snap pictures of her. We will survive without one.

True, but how does this have anything to do with being a sahm? only working moms would resort to a bumbo?

I imagine it has to do with having to budget a little more on one income so less gear fits into said budget. It isn't a commentary on working moms neglecting their kids in gear. I will work a little so we avoided a lot of gear but more because I'm a child development nerd.

The thing is I don't know what the belt does when the chair itself tips over. I've seen the chair tip, child and all. So what does the belt do for that?

I was just giving more information about the recall. If it's not a product you're comfortable using, then don't use it. I was always right there when DS was in it, so there was no chance for it to tip over. I also think if your baby is strong enough to tip the seat over, then they shouldn't be in it in the first place.

I agree with LucyD - we loved our Bumbo with DS and will be using it again (I've already ordered my buckle or whatever it is...) I hate when companies/products get blasted because of operator error. If you are sitting on the floor with your child while they are in this seat, as the product clearly states, your child won't get hurt. Hey here's a novel ideal - don't put your baby on the counter.

AGREED. I think this is more likely a case of user error rather than a defective product.

I think having to recall these for this reason is ridiculous! People should be smart enough to use them for their intended purposes, and the least they could do is, if they're going to put their child on a high surface I know plenty of people who have, myself included for meal time, the same rules apply as a changing table: you DO NOT so much as turn your back to your child without taking them out first!! Ugh, people make me stabby. I love my bumbo and Wyatt was able to use it from 1.53 months. He still fits in it lol.

I agree. We didn't buy one for Iain because I honestly think they are a waste but my Gran insisted on buying us one for River.

So, we have one now and we will be using it once we has proper head control. I just think it will make it easier for the kids to interact with one another and easier for R to watch Iain. Iain plays with it right now he loves to sit in it even though his legs are really too fat for it. lol

I was planning on getting one with LO is old enough to use it, but haven't yet b/c I don't want unnecessary things taking up space in our apartment. So, does this mean that they are going to stop selling them, or you are just encouraged to get the belt? There already seems to be a "run" on them online.

DS's thighs were way too chunky to ever use one of these. I think they're kind of a waste of money anyway. Babies learn to sit up better on their own. but yeah, it's kind of ridiculous that people would think it was ok to put baby up high in one of these chairs.
